how to boot my G5 into Ubuntu?

I saw these instructions on the forums to boot the latest version of Ubuntu:

download the iso.

Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
hdiutil burn image.iso

Place cd in drive
power off machine
hold down option key
power on machine.
click on cd
click on right arrow

I burned the CD, put it into the drive, booted holding Option, and nothing happens - the screen is blank, the monitor shows a yellow light (like it's not getting a signal), and the keyboard Caps lock light won't come on. The computer is humming and on, but not showing me any choices for boot drives. What am I doing wrong?

thanks,

Mike

Fink, Darwin ports, etc... what linux software do you need to run that you can't
run in Mac OS X Terminal.app & X11.app, do you really need to run a linux
window manager?

I have a spare G5 not being used for anything and I wanted to see if Ubuntu run natively would give me a fast, lean linux box; also I have some custom Linux code that uses a USB device and I wasn't sure it would work correctly on a Mac. Of course it might not work on Ubuntu/G5, but I figured I'd try.

is there a more fundamental problem with the boot process not specifically related to the Ubuntu??

Seems so, Option/alt key at bootup should show bootable drives.

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD Option+pr...

Does it boot into Open Firmware with CMD Option+of ?

reset-nvram (press Enter)

reset-all (press Enter)

nope - the screen stays black (monitor shows no signal coming), and fans are going pretty strong.

did that; it chimed 3 times then booted normally off the default internal OSX hard disk. I put in the CD, rebooted with holding down Option, and still no choices of what to boot from!
