Podcasts on iPhone but don't display

I've got an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2.1 and use iTunes 10.1.0.54. There's one particular podcast (the Clark Howard show) that I subscribe to that downloads and syncs to my iPhone, but it doesn't show up under the Podcasts section of the iPod part of the iPhone. Other podcasts show up on the phone and play normally. Here's the weird part: In iTunes, when my phone is connected, it shows the "missing" podcast under the Podcasts section beneath my phone. I can navigate to it in iTunes and even play the Podcast via iTunes from the file that is on my phone. But, I can't play the file when the phone is disconnected from iTunes.

I've unsubscribed and deleted the podcast from iTunes, synced so that it would be removed from the phone, and then re-subscribed & synced again. I get the same behavior. Can anyone help?

Rich,

I'm the producer of "The Cricket and Seagull" podcast. I deleted my podcast from iTunes and from my iPhone 4 and then resubscribed. I see it all in iTunes, even see it on my iPhone via iTunes, but when I disconnect my iPhone and search through the Podcasts, it doesn't show up.

I contacted Libsyn.com with this problem and they say since it's showing up in iTunes properly, that it's not something on their end, but something with the iTunes/iPhone interface. Not sure how to notify Apple about this, but this forum seems a good place to begin.

Since Libsyn.com hosts so many podcasts, I'm guessing eventually enough users will complain so they'll be in touch with Apple. At least I asked them notify Apple and informed them that this is happening with multiple podcasts they host.

Hoping for a quick resolution -- in the meantime, and as a stopgap measure, you can get The Cricket and Seagull App in the iTunes store and it's working fine.

🙂

I got a response from the Clark Howard show producers today. They said "Our techs tried to recreate the sync issues, but couldn’t—they had no trouble syncing on several devices. They suggest it may be something in your user settings." This is more evidence that the problem lies with iTunes or the iPod app in the iOS software on my iPhone. Clark Howard claims over 100,000 listeners to their podcasts, so they would likely get lots of complaints if the podcast itself was the source of the problem.

Related to the idea about ID3 tags, they said "One thing—we did have a week or two where our ID3 v.2 tags were being overwritten by an ad, but that stopped with the Dec 16 podcast." ID3 tags as the source of the problem seems to be a red herring.

Just for fun I decided to check whether I had the same problem with the Clark Howard show - the answer is yes! I haven't checked with the Seagull and the Cricket yet, may do that another day. So this shows that it's something to do with the iphone/ipod/iTunes software configuration.

I've just finished cutting and pasting all my Marathon Talk podcasts to date into new sound files, adding to iTunes library, and manually copying across to iphone (shows as music). It's a pain but I do need my podcasts for long runs!

I downloaded an episode of The Cricket and Seagull Fireside Chat and an episode of the Marathon Show (are those the podcasts you're having trouble with?) and both synched normally to my iPhone 3G, and appear on the phone under Podcasts. They also play normally from the iPhone. So I tried Clark Howard again - no luck.

I also noticed today that the Clark Howard podcast is the only one of my subscriptions that is flagged as "Clean" (not that the others are "dirty"!), but maybe that's also a factor.

I have now tried the cricket and the seagull fireside chat (episode of 7/1/11) and that definitely doesn't work either. I then located another random podcast labelled 'clean' "Inspiring words of encouragement" and the very same problem! OK, so it's the parental advisory content tags.

I then located another random podcast with 'explicit' content "No Agenda" and what do you know, that is ok! so in my case it just seems to be podcasts with the 'clean' tag. I've written to my podcast producer to find out whether they add the 'clean' tag themselves when producing in GarageBand, or whether it's added by their server Libsyn.

I definitely don't have any parental content restrictions set in my itunes. I'm about to do a bit of web research about this in case there is somewhere else it's set on the iphone itself.

I think I've found a workaround - I finally got Clark Howard to work on my iPhone. Here's what I did:

When iTunes downloads a podcast, the MP3 file goes into a folder with the podcast name. For Clark Howard, on my computer, it is c:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Podcasts\The Clark Howard Show. If I copy the MP3 file into a folder called "Automatically Add to iTunes" located in c:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music, then start iTunes, the file appears in the Podcasts section of iTunes without the Clean tag. Next time I sync, the podcast appears and plays normally on my iPhone.

So, I agree that the Clean tag seems to be a culprit. I think we're getting closer...

Yes! I don't know how you found that workaround of putting things into the 'automatically add to itunes' folder, but it worked to remove the clean tags on Marathon talk episodes, which then became visible on my ipod (once I'd removed the 'clean' versions that were still somehow showing up in my system)!

Obviously this is (yet another) bug but I'm happy to at last be able to get my beloved podcasts onto the ipod without the laborious copy-to-a-new-file-and-save-as-music routine. I will still have to remember to go through the Automatically Add to itunes routine but that is so much easier.

On my mac I don't have the same menus as on windows, so messing around with the "parental" tab in the itunes 10.1.1 preferences didn't seem to make any difference (I didn't have the 'restrict explicit content' radio button selected at any stage).

Well done us - hope this helps other users.

One further note for mac itunes 10.1.1 users. To get the 'unclean' versions of the podcasts to sync properly, you need to do the following steps:
1. in the itunes podcast list, delete the 'clean' versions leaving only the 'unclean' version in the list
2. on the ipod/iphone, remove the sync to the relevant podcasts, press apply, then add the sync again and press apply. This forces the ipod to upload the new 'unclean' version (it won't do so if it's previously synced the 'clean' version).

I tried the workaround above for "The Cricket and Seagull Fireside Chat" podcast (C&S podcast) described in the last few posts and I was then able to sync them to my iPhone and listen to them through the iPod application once the "Clean" designation was gone.

Then I noticed that I have other podcasts that are listed as "Clean" at the podcast level, but not at the individual episode level and they sync without problems.

Then I further noticed that the C&S podcast is designated as "Clean" at the podcast level and that most, but not all of the individual episodes are designated as "Clean". I found that the individual episodes that are not designated as "Clean" sync and play without problems, but those that are designated as "Clean" do not, unless you do the workaround.

Perhaps the area to focus on in fixing this bug is how the iPod application on the iPhone handles individual episodes marked as "Clean". In the meantime, another workaround may be for the podcast producers to mark the podcast "Clean" at the podcast level, but not at the episode level.

The Clark Howard Show producers removed the "Clean" tag from their podcasts starting today, and that solved the problem for me. Now their podcasts sync normally for me.

For Podcast producers, in order to resolve the problem, you need to remove the following tag (or change "clean" to "no") from the XML associated with the podcast:

<itunes:explicit>clean</itunes:explicit>
