2010 Macbook Air making me sick

After using my new 2010 13 inch, 256g, 4g Ram for about 10 minutes I can start to feel what would be best described as motion sickness. I don't have this from my 2009 Air, my 2009 Macbook Pro or any of my cinema displays (recent 24 and 27 inch LED models). I feel terrible after an hour.

I have a suspicion this is due to screen flicker. If you look at this screen flicker test Box 3 is flickering where it does not flicker on any of my other screens. Or the Macbook Pro's (2009 LED model).

Is anybody else experiencing this effect? Its so annoying, the new Air is fantastic in every other aspect.

First, have you upgraded to the most recent OS through Software Update? The flickering was fixed in the last update.

Second, you might have a one-off problem. I've done a pretty extensive search of the net for this problem, and nobody else is reporting it. The flickering, yep, it was there for some people before the update, but not any more.

If you continue to have problems, bring it in. But before you do that, make sure you have updated your software, and see if that is the issue. If you have not updated your software, that is the first thing Apple Support is going to have you do.

Thanks for the reply brnrunner.

Does anybody have any other flicker tests. What is strange is that I am looking at the old Macbook Air, my 27 inch Cinema Display and the 2010 MB Air - only the air is showing any signs of flicker on these tests - even if the tests are not the best why is this the only one to exhibit flicker? And why am I getting sick after an hour using it?

Very frustrating.

brnrubber, it would be interesting to know why you think the test is garbage? From what it seems its a fairly good LCD setup/testing site.

Not to be disrespectful, but how does working at Time Warner Cable "In the IT dept." make you an LCD flicker expert?

OP,
I’ve done the test at work on 2 HP1740’s and there is slight flicker on 4a & 4b. I think the anomaly is called pixel walk and not flicker. It appears on some websites with odd backgrounds that have lines extremely close together. I don’t think it would cause any ill health effects with normal web browsing. Is there one site/application you use regularly that makes you feel ill?

I will try my MBA tonight. If you are concerned, like you say, take it back to the shop.

Sorry .I did notice on my new Mac AIr when using certian websights when scrolling down the page with track pad i do see a little of flicker only when scrolling up or down on that page .When not scrolling and just looking at the page there is no flicker. The flicker will show the lettering on the sight also flickering around with the color. This Will cause an illness if you are sensitive to it.Its weird as it does not happen on all websights.Strange it does not happen on adobe.com .I do have Flash 10.1 installed Hummmm .i will deleate flash and see if it still happens and keep you posted.

Wow, i think there is more than rubber burning. I was stating that the site is actually a good test site for LCD monitors, look around, take a moment to look at the other tests. There's nothing bogus about the white saturation test or black levels, why would they make a bogus pixel walk test.

OP,
The test on my MBA shows that box 3 is "flickering" (same as yours I believe) although i'm not necessarily worried about that, most LCD's suffer from a pixel walk. In all other aspects of the screen i am more than happy with. At the end of the day, if it really is making you sick then you need to get it swapped and try a new one. Hope you get it sorted. Please let us know how you get on.

Im have a MacBook Pro 13" w/ OS X 10.6.6 which I just received yesterday. I started feeling wierd as in motion sickness and my eyes felt like they were going to bleed within about two hours of using it. I felt pressure in my forehead and a headache came on shortley after. Last night I went to bed with a splitting headache after reading many reviews and troubleshooting procedures for why the display is affecting me the way it is. I felt sick last night and almost threw up. Tonight I got back on my Mac and within a few minutes began to experience the same symptoms. It's so bad, I'm using my Dell to write this. I read that a matte could possibly fix this problem but am unsure. I'm looking at my Dell Inspiron 1545 right now and I don't feel the burning sensation. Apple has to know this is a problem by now.

Answering my own post here. I couldn't figure out why the posts had not been answered and now I realize it's because people had found the solution and probably just moved on. I downloaded Tinker Tools and adjusted all my fonts to Century Schoolbook 14. When I open my browser I simply zoom in one level. This seems to be doing the trick. I feel fine and have been on my Macbook Pro all day with no problems. I'm not sure if I feel better because of the changes I made or I simply adjusted to the new machine. Don't know and don't care. I'm not going to reset my config to find out. Anyway, If there is someone out there experiencing the same problems I had then I would suggest downloading Tinker Tools and giving it a shot. Thank God I don't have to send this MBP back!

Someone has probably answered this, but I am sensitive to motion issues (can't read in a moving car) etc. What I noticed was that I was bothered most when scrolling through files and folders on my Citrix desktop, which I do a lot. The large trackpad is great, but it will cover a lot of ground quickly. I have lowered the scroll rate to the minimum (don't forget, you can always whip it), and changed the pad sensitivity. I don't think the issue, at least for me, is flicker. I'm still trying to decide if I need a larger monitor for the office, but I'm leaning against that for now.
