iBook G4 sleep problem

I have a 2005 iBook G4 that was knocked off the bed by the dog. After that the screen stayed black after powering on, except in safe mode. With that in mind it was recommended that I replace the hard drive, which I did thanks to ifixit.com. After the hard drive installation the screen came on again, so I installed the original OS X 10.4.2. Since installing the OS, when booting the iBook it just goes into sleep mode, and won't wake. At which point I have to force shut down. It seems to respond the same using safe mode. I've read that the reed switch could be the trouble maker, but before I go tinkering with anything else I thought I'd ask if this could indeed be the problem, and if there's other thing to check out first?

I just tried resetting the PMU, but that didn't seem to do anything. Thanks for the suggestion...

Here are the PMU reset steps:

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

Are you able to boot successfully from your install DVD? I'm guessing at this point, but it could be the reed switch. I'll recruit some more experienced help for you.

Yes, I tried these PMU reset steps a couple of times to no avail. I was able to boot from the start up disc when I installed the OS after replacing the Hard Drive. I didn't mention this before but I don't see the Apple icon when I hit the power switch, in fact the first thing I'm able to see is the OS status bar. I've tried starting in Safe as well as Control mode, and the same problem occurs.

Lemon,
It's a 12" screen 1.33 I believe

If that's correct it's one of the easiest to deal with.
You should actually be able to see the reed switch connector in the bottom right of the RAM enclosure. It should have a red and black wire connected to it. Disconnecting that two wire cable will disable the reed switch. If that corrects the sleep problem then you've found the problem.
Here's an interesting note from the service manual.
Talking about the reed switch:
"Verifying the Board Version
Important: In October 2006, a new reed switch board (Apple part number 922-7829) was created. The new design is intended to minimize the risk of breakage to the glass switch.
Before reassembling the computer, make sure it includes the newer reed switch board. If the old board is installed, replace it regardless of whether the board is functional or not.
1. Check the top of the reed switch board, if the cable is soldered to the top of the board, as shown below, it is the new version, and no replacement is needed.
2. If the cable is soldered to the adhesive side of the board (as shown below), it is the old version. Replace the board with the newer version as described in this section."
So that would imply that these reed switches were subject to breakage.
If you need further instructions email me.

Lemon,
so I removed the Reed Switch, and everything started up like it should. Thanks so much for all of your advice!! I really appreciate it!

Yah! Always rewarding to solve a problem.

there is a clicking in the HD,

If that's that cyclic clicking, sometimes called the "click of death", then that is a problem.
Usually drives are guaranteed for at least a year (many for 3). Talk to your supplier or manufacturer about a replacement.
