Using the ipod shuffle as a usb storage device

I am able to use my ipod shuffle as a mass storage device on other peoples computers that do not have itunes installed on them. However when I then try and access the work saved on the ipod on my own desktop the computer does not recognise it as anything but an ipod and therefore I am unable to access anything saved on the ipod other than my music which I am able to access via itunes. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
