Why can't I export greater than 72 dpi?

Despite changing the Aperture -> Presets -> Image Export setting to JPEG of 300 dpi as the default.
When I execute File -> Export -> Version JPEG (original size) I get a jpg file of only 72 dpi.
What am I doing wrong please? Thanks in advance for any insight offered!

Aperture 3.0.2, OSX 10.5.8.

How large is the file that is exported, and what are its pixel dimensions?

Try exporting a version as a TIFF, then return to trying to export an original size JPEG.

The exported file is 10.4 MB, 5184 x 3456 pixels.
I exported it as you suggested TIFF then JPEG, both came out as 72 dpi.
???

With what app are you observing the DPI and pixel dimensions?

Sorry, just had a look through again and this mainly relates to the screen but still gives you an understanding of DPI and resolution.
