Text Edit Save function is grayed out

Cannot save a document in Text Edit all of a sudden. The save button is grayed out and will not work. Any ideas what may have caused this and how to restore the save function? Thanks!!

Save to a location you have permission to write to, such as the Desktop or Documents folders. If it's grayed out when you're looking at a folder in your home folder, select that folder in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and give youself access under Sharing & Permissions.

You also need to specify a name for the document. If this field is blank, TextEdit won't let you save it.

I have been trying to implement your advice. I cannot get a doc into the finder unless I save it, right? And I cannot save it because the save button is grayed out. I am trying to create new docs and save them. I am not concerned with already existing docs. Already existing docs do have the Get Info option under Finder, but new docs that haven't been saved do not, therefore I cannot get them into Finder and get access to change permissions. Hope I am making sense!!
