Did you try
Syncing the ipod with a different computer, in fact - did you try installing the update for the iPod using a different computer to the original one?
You can only
Sync your iPod with one computer. That computer has the songs and Apps that you added to the iPod and the iPod is simply a "copy" of your iTunes. While certain things, such as Apps, can be downloaded easily into your new iTunes on your second computer, because they are linked to your iTunes Store account, songs cannot. This includes songs youu may have purchased from iTunes. So the advice is back up purchased songs, because you can only download them once.
So it's unclear exactly what you have managed to do; apply the update from a second computer and therefore lose all the songs (which you say you haven't) or the original computer. If it was from the original, the Apps should have been in the iTunes library and therefore didn't need to be downloaded (from the Store) again.
What is the situation now, is your iPod working normally?
