iPhoto book error - won't complete book order

I've ordered an iPhoto book before, but on a different system. After working on a new photobook for weeks as a Christmas present, I go to order, but it doesn't let me. Here are the issues:

1) When I click on 'preview' (right clicking), the preview starts at page 1, and then stops immediately.
2) A prompt comes up that reads, "The operation couldn’t be completed.
(com.apple.chameleon.componentGenerator error 8.)"

Because this keeps happening, I tried to create ANOTHER photobook (but this one was for trial purposes, so I let Apple fill the pages for me). When I tried to preview it, same prompt is coming up.

What is this error, and what does it mean?

The only thing I can think is that I updated my iLife to 11' from an Apple disc. But.. that shouldn't cause the problem, right?

Help.
Thanks. =)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Backup the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:

Fix #1

Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Fix #2

Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.

Just read the thread. Same thing happened to me (error notice) after having successfully uploaded several books and calendars last month. I'm using iPhoto 11.

Tried the fixes suggested by Old Toad. Didn't work.

Through some troubleshooting I noticed that several of my image thumbnails had become corrupted in my Events. Once I located every corrupted image, deleted them from Events and re-imported them into the Library (from the Masters folder in the iPhoto Library) and into the book I was working on, I was then able to Preview the book without the error and also successfully export the book as a PDF.

I was able to fix this issue by choosing to right click and save a pdf. Instead of a worthless error message I received the specific file name that could not be found and then I was able to reimport the file and replace it in my book. This ended up being tricky because I forgot that I had placed it in the book twice once on the cover and then inside the book but when I replaced both copies the preview and export functions worked.

If you can identify the approximate page where the problem is, simply print to PDF and specify the page range range that contains the problem page. It is likely that your problem page will print as a blank/white page. From there, go back to the book and zoom in on each of the pictures with the slider. You will likely notice that one of the pictures has a thumbnail problem or is actually a movie file that you have accidentally placed in the book. Replace the photo and you should be good to go.

It is a corrupt image within iPhoto.

What you need to do is

1. identify the photo/image that is causing the problem, probably a more recently imported one.

2. delete the photo from both the calendar album and iPhoto's central album

3. then re-import that photo into iPhoto,

4. reimport that photo from the central album into the calendar.

That should fix it - that's what worked for me when I had my error above.

Hi Aaron, thank you for your response.

I tried and also tried to run a few repair cycles but this took forever given the size of my database.

I eventually decided to start from scratch using my backup pictures and imported them folder by folder into a new iPhoto database.

Also, after spending some time on the phone with apple support i decided to create one picture database per iMac user ... apparently the iPhoto database is not really meant to be shared.

It is now working - but i do wish there was an easier way to share the iphoto database.

One of the reasons i bought the iMac was to share the family pictures

I got this message too. I found out that I had placed a picture in the book that was merely a thumbnail and not a JPEG. Obviously for some reason that picture is corrupted and only shows up in the iphoto library as a thumbnail. When you try to view it in full screen you will see a blank page. If you find this picture and delete it from the photo book the error does not occur. I hope this resolves your problem because it did for me.

you will see a blank dark page with a grey triangle with exclamation mark therein.

It's not necessarily a corrupt photo. That exclamation mark is an indication that the file path/link between the thumbnail and the master image file has been broken. The following usually can fix it:

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.

2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
