7.5.2 Update causing skipping when playing via AirPlay
Since the iOS 4 iPad update, I have been streaming music from my iPad to my AirPort Express from Pandora. There have been no issues with this until I performed the 7.5.2 update to my AX. Now, I am experiencing pretty consistent pauses/skips when trying to listen to music.
I checked my AirPort Express logs, and the only items I'm seeing that seem to be happening pretty frequently seem to be:
- Dec 18 18:51:43 Severity:5 Rotated TKIP group key.
- Dec 18 18:44:31 Severity:4 AirTunes stream from 10.0.100.11 stopped.
Anyone help yet...?
I see there are a lot of posts re the cutting out of AE and toones, seems like apple need to get their updates sorted out pronto. By the way, my daughters ipod2 touch also cuts out when playing through airplay through AE, so dont think its the hardware using it, its definitely a problem with the AE or airport utility / Time capsule network thingy...
I have the same problem with skipping too. Sometimes AirPlay from my iPhone loses the ability to stream thru the Express totally and I have to power cycle all components, iPhone 4, ROuter and Express .... it's all very fragile to m 😟
Here too. Playing Pandora or iTunes, still skipping regardless of FW version. Playing from
MacBook (OS X 10.6.5) to Airport Express.
This is driving me, and my guests, crazy.
Didn't someone say they had talked to Apple? So they know about this?
I dont have any problem playing from Imac to AE or MBP to AE, only Ipad and pod/phone. It seems like the AE isnt waking up / responding to the request from the handsets on the wireless.
Have left them at 7.4.2 but still have the problem.
Have hard wired the Imac to the Bose for now....BOOM nice..
Matt, it looks like the most viable option is to downgrade back to the previous 7.4.2 firmware for the AirPort Express. Given everyone's issues and the consistency of them, my guess is that the 7.5.2 update changed the way in which the wireless AirTunes stream connection is managed, possibly channel management, signal management, etc - thus the skipping. (frustrating, because this was supposed to IMPROVE these things) But my AirTunes experience was solid before the update, so I would recommend downgrading back.
interesting. i moved, updated firmware, and have been having skips in airtunes ever since (i already had updated aiport utility). so i went back to 7.4.1 firmware, and ran pretty well (a few very-short skips).
just went back to 7.5.2 and...so far so good (1/2 hour). will see how this holds up.
all of this is far more mysterious than it needs to be; apple needs to fix the dropout issue...
I will say from my experience, that I did update to AirPort Utility 5.5.2 before I updated the AX firmware to 7.5.2, and I experienced the problems.
I'm not an expert on the relationship between the AirPort utility version and how this affects the operation of the AX, but my guess is that they are separate entities. The utility merely is the console that lets you make changes, to the hardware. Utility updates change change only the utility. While AX firmware changes the device itself and how it operates. (kind of how a Safari update doesn't alter the configuration of the servers and web pages I view with Safari)
Tim - Sorry it didn't work for you. I think updating to 5.5.2 has an effect, though I can't say for sure what it is. I don't think it was happenstance that updating to 5.5.2 eliminated the skipping issue for some of us.
Since AU is the conduit through which firmware updates are downloaded and installed, isn't it possible that AU 5.5.1 does not interact properly with AX firmware 7.5.2 during install or download (presumably, there's a reason Apple recommends 5.5.2 before 7.5.2)? Or perhaps updating to 5.5.2 altered whatever AX or router configuration was causing the skipping problem without affecting the firmware install itself. To me, it seems more analogous to upgrading Software Update or Mac OS X before installing a Safari update.
Matt and Sarah, are you using Indigo? If so, Indigo had me turn off Bluetooth on the iPad and that problem went away. My AirTunes still skips w/o iPad attached but your issue sounded a little different.
Exactly the same here. I have Airport Extreme, Airport Express, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhones, iMac, etc, and tge setup has worked perfectly for the past 5 or 6 years until the last few months. Now, I now suffer music dropout when streaming from any of the above devices. I also, occasionally, lose Internet to my MacBook Pro.
It goes without saying, I have done everything. Resetting, re-sighting, rebuilding, etc. The only thing that usually helps is if I put the laptop, iPad, etc., within a foot or two of the Airport Express. I haven't had to do this for the last 5 years though.
I can only think this has something to do with the latest iTunes release. Unless we all have faulty Airport Expresses!
I found a solution at last! At least it works for me. I am back to non-dropout airtunes 🙂
After much resetting, re-sighting, etc., I went back to 'channels'. Guess what? Success (for me at least) on Channel 12 - and ONLY Channel 12 !! Even holds good when reconfigured into WDS extended network. Happy days!
