Text messaging with Ford Sync

I have Ford's Sync service on a 2010 Flex. It works fine and connects through Bluetooth to my iPhone 3G and 3GS, for calls, voice and iPod use. Both the Ford and iPhone software have the latest updates.
The Sync, which is a MS product, has a messaging feature, where the car's system can send service warnings and status messages to a paired phone through text messaging or e-mail. When I attempt to turn this feature on, the system reports that the connected phone is not capable of connecting this way.
The Ford dealer suggests I use a Windows Mobile or Android phone, saying "all Apple products are crap." The dealer had originally said that I would not be able to pair my iPhone with the car at all and that is certainly not true. Is this just a Microsoft doesn't want to play nice with iPhone issue or is there some setting or other option that I am missing?

I just received the iphone 5 that was supposed to fix this issue. I bout the 4s 6 months ago and returned it due to this issue. I paired the iphone 5 today and the same thing happens. No text notifications sounds on the ford screen or through the phone. Thew iphone 5 is supposed to have Map "message access protocol" for bluetooth according to apple tech today. However when i spoke with them today they had no answers. They said that it whould work. I asked if there was a special way to turn it on in iphone setting and they did not know.

I was hoping for improved functions with my Iphone 5 and Ford Sync in the 2009 Ford Escape. No improvments. So, I thought that the fact that I now have Siri would be helpful, I could use Siri independent of Sync to read messages . Alas, when I press the Home Button on the Iphone 5.... it causes the Sync to try to dial voice mail (my actual number) and I cannot summon Siri. Seems the only way I can use Siri in my vehicle is to make sure there is no bluetooth connection from Iphone to Ford Sync. Problem then is ... I cannot hear Siri without it being played through the vehicle's sound system

I have 2011 Escape. I upgraded to 4s on ios6. After adding and deleting the 4S a few times from Sync, Siri is working when in Bluetotth Audio mode. I activate Siri on the iPhone and and voice input is via the Sync mic and out via the soundsystem. I was confused when I saw a phone number in the display, I didn't realize Siri made a phone call.

As far as text, itries to show me things, like my "text Inbox" but it always says 0. Bummer
