VGA adapter can't handle 1920x1080@60Hz ?

Hi,

I just found this sub forum so I'm reposting my problem into the proper forum if that's ok.

I bought an Air two days ago with a VGA adaptor, for use with an iiyama 24" VGA monitor.

When I set the monitor to its native 1920x1080@60Hz resolution, I get fast moving zig zag disturbance all over the screen that quickly comes and goes, continuously.

I've tried a different VGA cable and even a different VGA monitor (an HP 2007w). Both monitors have the problem, and only at 1920x1080. When I set either monitor to a lower resolution, the disturbance goes away. Of course I want to be able to use my iiyama's native 1920x1080 resolution.

Any ideas? My guess is that either the SVGA adaptor or the Air's graphics chipset is flawed in terms of driving VGA monitors. I hope I'm wrong.

I have the exact same problem with my 13" MBA for both 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 resolutions on my 24" HP and 30" Dell monitors respectively. It's getting pretty annoying, and I didn't notice it at first - I've had my MBA since the new version came out late last year.

FWIW I'm using an Apple Dual-Link DVI connector on my 30" Dell and an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA on my HP 24" so it can't just be DVI or VGA or a low quality cable. I think there's something wrong with the video cards on the new model MBAs, unfortunately.

I'm going to search around a bit more and then probably call Apple... 😟

I don't own a MBA myself, but I work at a college, and I've had two speakers come in this week with MBA's who had this same problem. I'm the MBA up to an Epson PowerLite Pro Z8000WUNL projector using the mDP to VGA adapter, and at the highest resolution (which I always run MBP's and other macs on), I get the zig-zag distortion.

This isn't a huge issue for me, because I don't have to worry about it on a daily basis, but I'm positive that there will be more people who come through the school with MBA's, and I'd like to at least know WHY this is happening, and if possible, if it can be fixed.

I too am experiencing this problem with a 2011 Mac Book Pro 15" model. Before buying the new MBP I had a 2009 MBP with NO problems. I'm using the same external monitor and the same Apple DP to VGA adapter that I used on my previous MBP. Again, with the old MBP I had no problems. Now with the new MBP I constantly get the flickering -- toggling the resolution in and out of 1600x1200 sometimes stops it -- unplugging and replugging in the cable sometimes stops it -- otherwise you just wait and pray. This is really REALY bad.

The firmware update for the adapter is at v1.03, and it told me that my adapter was already at 1.03. No good! Something is messed up with the new Macs -- I can only assume that the late 2010 MBAs are sharing some common hardware with the 2011 MBPs.

The good news is that there are reports elsewhere that if you install Windows 7 on the new MBPs there are ZERO Problems under windows 7. That makes it sound like a driver issue. We can only hope!

On a related note, at the office I use an Apple DP to Dual-Link DVI to a 30" 2560x1600 monitor and there was a period where I noticed strange green static on my black terminal windows. I only noticed it for a couple minutes after booting and then it went away -- so I don't know if that is related...

Apple, please fix this -- I use my MBP as a primary system that travels with me from office to home and it's vital that external monitors work optimally!!
