VGA adapter can't handle 1920x1080@60Hz ?

Hi,

I just found this sub forum so I'm reposting my problem into the proper forum if that's ok.

I bought an Air two days ago with a VGA adaptor, for use with an iiyama 24" VGA monitor.

When I set the monitor to its native 1920x1080@60Hz resolution, I get fast moving zig zag disturbance all over the screen that quickly comes and goes, continuously.

I've tried a different VGA cable and even a different VGA monitor (an HP 2007w). Both monitors have the problem, and only at 1920x1080. When I set either monitor to a lower resolution, the disturbance goes away. Of course I want to be able to use my iiyama's native 1920x1080 resolution.

Any ideas? My guess is that either the SVGA adaptor or the Air's graphics chipset is flawed in terms of driving VGA monitors. I hope I'm wrong.

So this absolutely has to do with the ability (or lack there of) for the video card at high resolutions to sync properly with the monitor using the VGA connection.

Mine started with the wavy picture (kind of like if you hit the deguass button on old tube monitors) everytime I booted up, but would go away after 3-5 minutes. Now after about 5-6 months of use, it is non-stop. Completely unusable.

I purchased the mini displayport to HDMI adapter and connected to the monitors HDMI port (the DVI port was already in use by another computer). Now I can run at 1920X1200 with no issues. Note this is a higher resolution (and my monitors native resolution) than I could run with the VGA adapter. The wavy picture problem has disappeared. So it sure appears to be something with the VGA adapter and sync'ing to the monitor at high resolutions.

Solution? Could be. Look up the Kanex iAdapt VGA adapter. I just picked one up yesterday for $22 (I'm seeing them under $16 online) and have been using it in 1600x1200 mode without the slightest glitch during that time. If Apple doesn't care enough to fix a problem they've admitted to... time to look for solutions elsewhere.

(Now if I could just get my money back for the Apple adapter... - yeah, right.)

Hello,

I had the same problem attaching my 1.8Ghz i7 13" Macbook Air (2011 Model) to a brand new Samsung Sync Master SA450 in a clients office @ 1680*1050 via a VGA Adaptor on the Thunderbolt Connector

After I exchanged the VGA cable to a cable (without magnets for interference suppression) a cable that was a little longer than the original one, the monitor now works perfect ...

So perhaps have your cable under suspect ;-) I tried out 2 cables - and the 3rd one worked then

I'm usually answering questions rather than posting them, but I had the same shimmer problem for over a year, then thought to check the forum (which I should have done a year ago).

Thanks to all of the posts over almost 2 years I went out and got a mini displayport to DVI adapter and it fixed the problem for my 13" MBA, late 2010.

I was almost ready to replace my LG 24" display, so this thread really saved me.
