Can't setup POP3 E-mail on mail client on my MacBook Pro

So this problem is getting really out of hand and I'm not sure what options I have left. So here are the details:

I'm trying to set up my work e-mail (the site host is Network Solutions) with Mail. There seem to be no problems with the online client. I can sign on without any troubles so password and username are correct. I'm using Mail 4.4. I first enter my name, e-mail, and password with no problems. Then for the incoming mail server I do the same, choosing POP, and I get the following message:

"The POP server "mail.companysite.com" (with the proper domain inserted) is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages."

i get this regardless if i put my username as just username or username@companyname.com and my network connection is fine as my other e-mail accounts (2 gmails set up as IMAP) work just fine. I've tried using different ports other than the default 110. Still the same problem.

An interesting little quirk is that at one point it actually did work, then suddenly without any changes to anything that I could tell, it stopped. When it was working, I had it set up on my iPod touch and even when it stopped on my computer it kept working on my iPod. But that also didn't last as now I can no longer connect or even set it up.

But wait! There's more. I've tried all the different debugging methods I can come up with, including trying to set it up on different e-mail clients, Entourage and Thunderbird, with the same result. Then I eventually tried it on another computer, on a PC running Windows XP, and wouldn't you know it, it set up without a hitch! so this means that my account is properly set up for this. Furthermore, I know it is possible to use an e-mail client on a mac with this domain as one of my coworkers has set it up on Entourage and Mail as well as his iPhone. I have no firewall settings currently on so nothing should be blocking and i've tried it using several different internet connections in different countries (seemingly then it's not a router or modem issue)

Anyone have any ideas? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Let me know if there's any more info you would need me to provide.

Yeah, I had actually seen that discussed in other forums/discussions, but, as I said originally, I've tried both with and without the domain name in the username.

I'm thinking it might have something to do with the fact that I use a VPN to connect to the internet making my proxies all screwy. Unfortunately I don't know much about proxies so don't know how to troubleshoot that at all. But I do know that there are times when I can't even get to non-great firewall of China blocked sites if I don't have my proxy turned on (it tells me to check my proxy server settings) and other times there are no problems with or without the proxy on.

Hi,
this is my first post,
I have problem in connection Mail to all my accounts Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, ...
it works in a direct connection without Proxy, by in my entreprise we have a Proxy with a strict ports used so there are no account that can connect it gives the error :
"" Le serveur a renvoyé l’erreur La connexion au serveur « imap.gmail.com » sur le port 993 a expiré.""

so our network administrator asked me to look for this information about the port used or the protocol so he can see if he can make something .

please if any one have information about how to pass a proxy with Mail (port used or protocol ), so that we can make a restriction in our proxy ,

thanks .

waiting for your answers .

Hello,

You may not find an answer within this Mail forum. It is frequently mentioned that with Proxies selected the Mail app will not connect to either receive or send. See:

http://www.ehow.com/how4485283use-proxy-access-gmail.html

Not sure that is helpful when using an email client like Mail or Outlook. I see Port 443 mentioned as an alternative behind a proxy, but I have no experience.

You might contact Gmail support, and get good advice. They are likely the most informed of the three you mention.

Hi,

other question :
I have now the last version of iTune 10.2.1, but it seems that when iTune is downloading some file : a podcast, a books, or ... it doesn't respond to my actions like : stop downloading, or even when trying to close completely iTune it gives a warning that there is some thing downloading and give a choice to quit or complete downloading, when I choose to quit completely nothing happens iTunes still running and downloding just like I did nothing.

so I thing there is a probleme with this new version in the downloading part.

thanks in advance.
