Problems with Garageband and Presonus FireStudio Mobile

Previously, I had a Firebox that was a floor demo and never had these problems. It glitched, but it always came back.

I just got the Firestudio Mobile yesterday after returning the M-Audio 610, which likewise didn't have these problems, but had lots of drop-outs in the signal.

Out of the box, installed the software, did the "update firmware" from Universal Control and rebooted. Hooked up the box, got the blue light, opened Garageband and started playing a project. No problem - until I went to choose another track and the sound muted. Checking the preferences in Garageband, "Presonus Firestudio" didn't appear as a driver choice - it had been booted. I did a full uninstall of the software, reinstalled and pulled the update from the Presonus website (latest version, right?), did the "update firmware" from Universal Control and rebooted. Still, after switching to another track in Garageband, the sound suddenly cuts out, though the meters are still showing that signal is flowing.

Universal Control hasn't been much help, since it has continued to behave oddly - first getting more noticeably sluggish until finally refusing to respond at all and locking up. I got lights at first through Universal Control, and then the meters fail to show anything. Each time between FireStudio drivers, I've dumped the family driver files, rebooted, repaired permissions, cleared PRAM and started fresh, paying close attention to how I updated the latest versions. Stranger still - when I turn the main volume down - I still get signal coming from the right monitor. Mono sound comes out of both speakers when I turn the main volume up. At least until I switch tracks to edit and then, the sound winks out and Garageband ignores the presence of the FireStudio.

This same thing would sort of happen with the FireBox (which I got rid of because channel 2 developed some kind of hum and loss of volume), but instead of completely muting volume, it would glitch and garble the audio signal until I stopped the track, gone into Audio/MIDI, switched the format from 48 and back to 44.1 to wake it up and continue on. The FireBox problem was occasional. The mute problem and kick out with FireStudio happens every single time.

I'm running an iMac - 10.5.8

Processor 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo

Memory 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Of course, thank you for any help.

I have got exactly the same problem!
I recently Swapped to Firestudio mobile after i had to ditch my old FireBox for the same reasons (developed some kind of hum and loss of volume).
Now i have the problem that I cannot set my Firesudio mobile to stereo. It playes both channels as mono on both headphones and speakers. I tried to update the firmware in Universal Controller: it says that it has successfully updatedit and that it will 'take place after the next power cycle' but after rebooting nothing has been updated. It prompts me to update the firmware again.

I had nothing but problems with all Presonus products so far and will definitely not buy another product from them in the future.

Can someone please advise me on how to set this thing to stereo and how to update the firmware?

cheers!

Hi... wow, lots of things going on there. I just got one of these units and so far my install has gone fine. I have not put it through its paces with GB yet but will report back later when I have had some time with it. I have used it to play software instruments via MIDI into Ableton Live and all worked fine, and I am currently listening to iTunes through it as I type this.

Have you sorted your issues yet?

Presonus Knowledge Base:
Why is the audio coming out of my FireStudio family interface mono only?
Tech Support Nov-09 2010
By default all inputs and playback streams on the FireStudio family interfaces are set to mono. To
make a pair of inputs or playback streams true stereo, launch the Device Window and click on the
link button between the inputs or playback streams you wish to make stereo.

So far I really like this thing. I am replacing an Alesis iO/14 which has developed some issues. I really liked the Alesis. So far this thing is winning me over.

Installation was easy though it did not happen the way described in the installation instructions. All in all, so far so good.

Just a follow up on my new Firestudio Mobile.

1. The knobs are really solid/firm, they don't wiggle like others I have looked at. Apparently the pots are sealed meaning that over time no dust etc would get in and contribute to 'crackling' when adjusting them.
2. All drivers installed flawlessly first time. There is a trick to the Mono/Stereo sound thing but its easily dealt with (see previous post).
3. Worked fantastic via bus power only using the 48v phantom power to record audio with my Rode NT2000 condenser mic.
4. Recording MIDI via the supplied breakout cable was easy. However, I will have to keep the breakout cable in a safe place as not to loose it. Would have preferred to have the MIDI in and out hard wired to the box, but then that would have made it bigger.
5. Its a nice size, I can see easily taking this in a bag to do some off site recording.
6. The aluminum/steel construction feels really solid in your hands. No plasticy feel about it.
7. Very happy with the audio so far.

ITs kickassss for the money 🙂
