I paid a full price for a LOCKED iphone 4

I bought an iphone 4 outright from apple store in melbourne. After inserting a microsim from other carrier (Maxis Malaysia), Itunes show "The sim card inserted does not seem to be supported". I've tried everything and even restoring but no luck. Does anyone out there have the same problem? Anyone has any idea how to solve this problem?

My friend who bought the same iphone 4 from Australia works fine after he called up telstra to do the unlocking whereas I bought the UNLOCKED outright from apple store is locked. Anyone has any idea how to solve this problem which APple themselves cannot solve, apart from jailbreaking as it will void the warranty?

I have contacted Apple store. They say the engineering department hasn't updated the status for my case yet. I'm just wondering if this problem is that uncommon. I should have bought the iphone under a contract which i could easily unlock it via the telco, rather than totally clueless what actually is going on because from the serial number i gave, the operator told me my iphone 4 is actually unlocked. Unlocked but still unable to use other carrier which doesn't make sense.

I've seen this once before where a customer purchased an officially unlocked phone, directly from Apple in France, only to find the phone was in fact carrier locked when he returned home. He contacted the store where he purchased the phone, they escalated the case & Apple support quickly fixed the issue by adding the phone's IMEI number to the officially unlocked data base. Your only choice, to get this fixed, is to stay in contact with the store where you purchased your phone & Apple support. We don't live in a perfect world, mistakes happen. However, I've always found Apple quick to rectify errors on their end.
