Apple TV -> Onkyo Receiver -> HD TV = FAIL

Is this particular setup supposed to work? We just moved into our new home (brand new construction) and we got hardwired surround sound with an Onkyo receiver and since all signals these days are digital everything runs through the Onkyo. The cable box and the DVD player plug directly into the Onkyo and only a single HDMI cable runs into the TV. No other cables plug into the TV.
The Apple TV doesn't even show up but when we plug it directly into the HDMI port on our bedroom TV it works just fine.
Anyone else successfully set this up in their house?

iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.5.7), Comcast ethernet connection

I have an Onkyo TX-SR604 and a Visio HDTV. No firmware updates are available for the TX-SR604. I hooked the Apple TV directly up to another HDTV, changed the video resolution to 1080p-60 Hz, installed the latest update, hooked the Apple TV back up to the Onkyo, and everything worked first time. I checked afterwards and the video resolution was set back to Auto, so I'm assuming it was the Apple TV update that fixed the problem.
