TomTom 1.6 problems with iPhone 4 (4.2.1 8C148))

Recently updated new TomTom Western Europe to iPhone 4 and it stopped working. When you start the application, it display TomTom logo screen (loading screen) and then quits. The application remains active in background (double tap home button) but remains non functional. Launching the application again repeats the above.

I have tried to uninstall the application from iPhone and iTunes and reloading and installing the application again and also rebooting the iPhone (also tried restore) and same results. The said application works fine on wife iPhone 3GS with same iOS (although it is marked 8C148a).

I have the same exact problem. Interestingly, I manage 2 iphone 4s on 2 separate iTunes accounts. They set up identically. On one, TomTom 1.6 works perfectly after the update. On the other it hangs and crashes . I have installed and uninstalled numerous times trying various things such as setting up as a new iphone, to complete resets before and after installation. Nothing works.

So I asked for support via email from TomTom.

This is what they replied with:

Dear Omer,

Thank you for taking the time to contact TomTom Customer Support. My name is Jenny and we are always happy to help.

Please rest assured that you are important to us. We are working diligently to assist all of our customers in a timely and efficient manner.

I understand that your TomTom iphone4 app crashes. I will surely assist you with this.

In order to resolve the issue, I would recommend you to reset the iPhone and then uninstall & reinstall the TomTom application.

Here are the steps to do so:

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button (on top of the iPhone) and the Home button (below the screen) at the same time for at least 10 seconds. Keep holding these buttons even if Slide to power off is shown or the screen turns black. Hold the two buttons until the Apple logo appears.

The above instructions should reset your device.

You can then uninstall the TomTom app from the iPhone:

1) Press on one of the application icons till they start shaking and symbol with a cross appears in each 3rd party app.
2) Tap on the icon till a warning message will ask if we want to delete the application, then tap on "Delete".

You can now re-download and install the TomTom app. Here is the link that has the steps to do so: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

So obviously that did not work.

So I called them. They said if the above doesn't work then the problem was Apple's fault and that there was nothing they could do.

Can you believe that?

So I installed TomTom 1.5 to see if the last version works and it does. New version doesn't.

For some reason that I cannot seem to identify it appears to work on my wife's iphone 4 (which is updated and set up exactly like mine).

The only difference between our iphones is that I have about 50 more apps installed on mine than hers.

I do not know what to do at this point.

TomTom customer service blows chunks and this obviously is not Apple's fault like I was told over the phone. I have about 250 apps. They all work except one.

I want my money back darn it.

EDIT: My version of TomTom 1.6 is USA & Canada. I have read of other people having crashing problems with other regional maps since the 1.6 update.

Thank you for this additional information. So it is not just the iPhone 4 but instead some little variation between the devices. Hope Apple can look into this.

I also contacted TomTom support and received basically same reply. At the end they said thats all they can do and that I should contact Apple instead. Contact where? Tried through iTunes by reporting the problem with application and all they did, was mark it up for new download which I did and reinstalled the application. No help.

My wife also have way less applications than I do but the dormant application amount should not be problem? I was thinking that maybe it was because I have more running applications, but quitting every application except TomTom did not help either.

Hope Apple can look into this.

Directions to revert back to TomTom 1.5

If you have time machine enabled then all you do is:

1)enter time machine and click back to the date before you updated and choose to restore the file in users>youraccount>music>itunes>mobile applications>US - Canada 1.5.ipa

2)save this US - Canada 1.5.ipa file to your desktop. (or whatever region you are using)

3)open itunes

4) click on Apps and delete your current TomTom (1.6 version) by right clicking it and choosing delete.

5)Drag the US - Canada 1.5.ipa on your desktop to the App window currently open on your itunes.

6)It will process for a few minutes; and will be ready to sync to your phone.

7) before you sync make sure you delete the 1.6 tomtom of your phone first (hold your finger on the app till it vibrates, touch the little x on top of it, lastly touch the home button)

8) sync.

I got the Argentina-Uruguay version of this app, but I got a different problem than yours. The application works, but for my country (Uruguay) the states and cities are divided by "seccions"??? Now it's impossible to find a street name when I want to go to an address, since for every city there is a seccion that enclose a few street names, so you have to guess what seccion has the street you are looking for. I have the feeling for what I read in this post, TomTom 1.6 update came out half baked.

I too am having this problem. I deleted the app from my phone. Turned my phone off. deleted and sent to recycle bin, tomtom app.Turned my phone back on. re downloaded tomtom app. reinstalled tomtom app onto my phone. touched icon and much to my dismay, the app still showed logo screen and then crashed out to homescreen... Been searching everywhere for a fix. nothing. Anyone have any fixes or ideas?

I too have had issues since the 1.6 update, 1.5 was fine on my iPhone 4. Now I get the splash and crash. This is the NZ version, strange that it runs fine on my 3G iPad and iPhone 3GS....on iOS 4?
I did a full restore SW on my iPhone 4, setup as new phone and it works.... restored my data, crash.
I have restored my 1.5 version and it works fine.
If anyone requires the NZ version let me know via email and I will make it available for you.

We are having a similar issue between two handsets that are running identical apps. They were purchased at the same time and have been updated identically. Both had the previous version of Tomtom Western Europe. Our issue is that when Tomtom updates the mapshare one system crashes and the other works fine.

In this message I am just trying to put over the point that app crashes are not necessarily related to versions or apps installed.

Hope this helps. I am actually looking for help on why the mapshare fails on one and not the other.
