GN Netcom USB Headset Outputs But Doesn't Input

Problem: New GN Netcom 2120 NC Headset connected via GN Netcom 8110 USBXP Digital Audio Adapter to my G5 2.7 Dual Processor (OS 10.4.3) has incomplete functionality:
- Earpiece works and sounds great. Can play system sounds, iTunes, etc. through it.
- Microphone works to the extent that all sound coming into it comes through the headphone's earpiece. (GN Netcom 8110 manual states "user accessible side tone which allows you to hear your own voice in the headset speaker...")
! Microphone will not input to Mac. In other words, using the Sound System Pref > Input > GN 8110 selected no sound registers on the input levels. I confirmed this by attempting to make a voice recording in QuickTime. The recording was flat / blank.

What I've tried:
- Tested on a PC to be sure hardware was functioning properly. Had complete, correct functionality. Able to make a voice recording.
- Tested headset on my PowerBook 17" 1.5ghz with same failures as G5.
Back on the G5:
- Hooked up standard audio microphone through Griffin USB iMic and was able to successfully make a voice recording.
- Tried every possible combination of input/output levels and sources in the Sound System Prefs.
- Every possible combination of selections in the Speech System Pref (Speech Recognition will not work with the microphone).
- Fooled around somewhat with Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
- Changed USB ports (tried keyboard, front of G5, back of G5).
- Called GN Netcom Tech Support 3X without resolution (told I needed to talk to Apple).
- Called Apple, Had me create a new user and login to that user to be sure wasn't a system problem. Same problem under new user. (told me I needed to talk to GN Netcom).

I've found very limited info on USB headsets. Most people seem to be using Bluetooth which I tried and hated. The few suggestions I did come across were "clicking and unclicking the mute button in Sound System Pref", "changing settings in Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup" and even launching Garageband (no luck with mike there either.

Other posts mentioned possible problems with CoreAudio. This seems like the likely culprit, but I need to determine if there's a solution before I return a rather expensive headset and USB adapter which I pinned a lot of hopes on for VOIP.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

If you were able to successfully voice record with
the iMic, why not use it instead of the USBXP Digital
Audio Adapter?

Thanks for the question.
My success with the iMic was using a standalone audio microphone only. But, there's no way to have the Netcom USB adapter or the headset interface with the iMic since the iMic has USB and 1/8" phono plugs only. I tried to figure out some way of doing that, but the headset has a "quick-connect" plug that will only connect to the Netcom USB adapter.

And the telephony software does not see the
microphone connected to the iMic or can't be made to
see it?

It actually does see it, as does QuickTime (where I was able to make a recording) but although the microphone is a mid-range older stand-type recording mike that makes great recordings to tape, etc., it's quality through the Mac leaves a lot to be desired. I was actually able to make a Gizmo VOIP call using that microphone for testing purposes and left myself a voice mail, but the quality was very poor (I'm assuming because it wasn't designed for that type of use).

But even if the quality was sufficient, that doesn't resolve my goal of having a one-piece headset with mike for VOIP. I'd still need separate headphones for listening. Additionally, the mike on the Netcom headset is noise-cancelling and designed for telephony. The recording I was able to make with it on the PC seemed quite good.
