ADC to DVI

Dear Mac people

Called Apple Store Japan to order a new Mac Mini. Checked with them about using my old clear plastic Apple Cinema Display 20 inch, which has an ADC connector for my G4 Quicksilver. (NB This just has a single plug, not the type with a ring and 3 plugs from it, as I've seen in some manuals)

They said that Apple used to have ADC to DVI connector cables but don't sell them now. They also said that they are not supposed to say! but that I could find one from another maker, connect it to my display's cable and then connect a MiniDisplayPort to DVI Adapter cable to that and the Mac Mini. But Apple doesn't "support it" so they would not say if it works properly or not.

I'm wondering whether this type of monitor, which draws its power through this single cable from the computer is the reason for Apple saying they won't "support" this method.

So, my questions are: (1) will it work properly? (2) if yes, what maker's cable is best (or they are all the same)? (3) if there are no problems with the use of two adapter cables together like this, why does Apple say it doesn't "support" this?

I've checked through discussions but can't find a definitive answer for my problem. Hopefully, someone who has been in the same position can advise or someone "in the know" from the Mac community. Thanks in advance.

Am posting a reply to my own question. Hope it helps some other people.

After more exhaustive searching have found a couple of posts, in particular, one by BSteely 2010/10/07 (over 5,700 posts! - great stuff!) which suggests that it will work.

But am still interested in why Apple stopped selling them and why they won't tell me directly whether it will work on their new Minis.

It seems strange to me that they say, "I'm not really supposed to tell you but ..." and then, "Apple doesn't support it (i.e. ADC to DVI cable & then DVI to MiniDisplayPort cable)" and finally, "Do you want to go ahead and order the Mini now?" !!

Found a Belkin F2E9142-WHT Pro Series ADC to DVI Apple Monitor Adapter, which I'll buy and hope will be OK. Cheers to the New Year to all.

Giles, hey, thanks for the kind words. You are on the right track. The Apple adapter you seek can be purchased used on the secondary market but the price has skyrocketed and may not be worth it.

Apple quietly EOLed (end-of-lifed) that adapter in mid-2010. I believe they satisfied the minimum legal requirement for supporting their older monitors and then stopped at that. But it should still work, assuming you can find the adapter at a reasonable price.

By pure chance I found a new one on a shelf in a shop that has a small Mac section. So, I bit the bullet, bought it, and then went online to Apple Tokyo and ordered the Mini. Like you say, it should be right.

But to let other people know who are wondering if it really does work with the 2010 Mini and this double adaption method, I'll make another post in about a week's time, after I get it and set it up.

Happy New Year
