Apple TV Crashing / Resetting Itself

My Apple TV (2nd Generation) has started to reset itself after a few minutes of either a program or movie. The first crash happens usually after about 15 mins of viewing, but then subsequent ones occur after around 5 mins.

I'm running up to date software version 4.1.1 and my itunes is the current version of 10.1.1 (4)

I've tried resetting all settings but its made no difference. Any ideas on what to try next?

I am joining because of the same problem. Only happens with music though. Especially I tunes radio and even when using home sharing. Im amazed I can stream hd video to my hearts content but im out of luck if I want to stream a simple song. Makes no sense. My reboots in no consistant manner. Sometimes it will play 3 songs sometimes it wont play 3 seconds. Using wired ethernet straight to my comcast router and my imac wired also. I remember back in the day it always worked, now after the last update it never works.

I started having the problem with video too. I fixed it though. Not an apple problem. Mine turns out is a comcast xfinity wireless gateway. I bought a moto surfboard and I am using my old dlink router. Now everything is operating as an apple product should. If anyone is using a cable modem and router provided by you ISP. Ditch it and buy one.

If you'd like to have some fun ask Sirii why does my AppleTV crash and see what she says. "That's a really good question" is the response I get. Same when asked why it resets itself. On mine the resets are pretty rare so it isn't a big deal but I can't help but think there should be a solution if Apple actually cared. They did a billion in sales of ATV last year so the hobby excuse is out.

For the last few months I've been having crashes/resets on my Apple TV v2. It's now happening about once per day or after every 4 to 8 hours of use (whichever comes first). The first hint of a problem usually comes with a few, VERY brief audio dropouts or distortions (happens for just a fraction of a second, like a stutter) . Then, within about an hour of that happening the Apple TV will just reset itself.

Truth be told, while my Apple TV has never been rock-solid stable for weeks on end it seems like something happened a few months ago that has caused more and more resets/crashes on the device. It could be a looming hardware failure but I really suspect that it has something to do with a software update that was done within the last several months (it MAY have started with the v6.2.1 update that was done in the middle of September).

I don't have any solution, so I'm just adding to the reports made by other owners of the v2 hardware.

Hard to believe that this problem has been around so long. We've started experiencing it in the last month. I upgraded my Netflix to Turboflix, watched about 50 episodes of shows and then it started happening...just like that. Since then I've tested my modem (rental from telephone company) and it seems to be working just fine (24.7 mbps download, 1.9 mbps upload). I decided to hook up to ethernet just in case, that hasn't made any difference. Now I can get through the intro running what happened on the previous episode, usually without a glitch, but then as soon as the show starts I have between 1 and 5 minutes before it reboots. Goes back to start screen with just computer and set up icons, then starts rebuilding list of home icons. What is going on?

Within the past 5-6 weeks, our AppleTV crashes whenever we use Netflix. It will connect, let us browse titles, and will even start an episode or movie, but after 30 seconds - 5 minutes, the app shuts down and we're sent back to the Apple TV main menu. We have checked our internet speed and connection and everything is fine. We have also started experiencing this crashing problem when using Hulu, but Netflix is by far the worst. What is so strange is that the AppleTV worked great for a couple of months, and now it *****. We have switched back to using the Wii to stream our Netflix, but the picture resolution is terrible. So disappointed in Apple for this one.

We have 2 AppleTVs in the house. Both are version 2 (non fully HD black units).

Both of our units on the same update started to have a similar issue. We would watch TV Shows, Movies, and similar from any media source including streaming from iTunes Library, Apple TV Show streaming, and Netflix streaming. We do the largest amount of Netflix streaming and it has become a recurring issue which we experience multiple times daily.

I'm glad to support Apple if there is anything I can do to help identify the problem, please feel free to reach out if I can pull logs, network pings, or other potential data that may assist in resolving the issue.

Thanks!

After literally years of dealing with this and having my cries fall on deaf ears, I have found a workaround. Before I attempt to watch a show on Netflix or Hulu, I restart the Apple TV. (Settings > General > Restart). It's really ***** but it works. When I remember to do this, I am rewarded by uninterrupted watching of whatever I so choose. Hey Apple, fix your d@mn memory leak already!

Would a few of you reply with whatever version of AppleTV software you're running?

I'm curious, because I've always had automatic updates enabled and I do check manually from time to time. Thing is, I didn't know until tonight that there was a version 6.2.1 out there, because that's NOT what my ATV had installed until AFTER I restored it. Wish I'd have made a note of exactly which OS it had prior to the restore, but whatever it was, it was not current.

Don't know if this'll fix the constant reboots, but if not, I'm not buying the new model. Fool me once, and all.
