Iphone 4 dead in a tropical country! Unrecoverable error 2001

Hi folks,

I was happily wondering around here in Brazil and my iphone decided to die! After a long period only restarting to the white apple logo, I managed to get a good internet connection and I tried to put it in recovery mode and itunes downloaded the last update and tried to recover it.

But now it goes into recovery mode, checks with apple, reads like it is starting the recovery, and when it checks with apple again, gives me this nasty error "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error has ocurred (2001)."

I tried everything by the book including resetting the SMC in my macbook pro.

My phone is still under 90 days old, which means I could still call apple care. The problem is that here in Brazil, they tell me to call my mobile provider and no, my mobile provider is not brazilllian (uk).

Any ideas? I am desperate and there's no blue sea and coconut trees that can make me less obsessive about it.

Eduardo.

Actually I looked for this water damage indicator thing, but I don't see anything.
Where is it really located? It is very humid here. Brazil, Recife, which is a very humid place.
I started having the issue when I was at london Heathrow nightmare just before the christmas.
They made us stay in the cold for 6 hours at -7 degrees Celsius.

Could that be it? I'm not sure but no way this got near the water, it wasn't snowing, but yes, when we do get out of a plane here in Brazil, my glasses usually get wet.

To all that replied with similar problems, I've got back to England and had my iphone replaced.

Then I asked the genius what would happen if it breaks again when I am in Brazil. He then asked for a brazillian colleague working at the store (genius as well) and he told me that any apple authorized technical support can do the same and replace it. It's a little unknown fact, but even if your phone was bought abroad, you can still fix it.

Hope this helps you all.

Hey Augusto,

Felipe, a genius of Apple Store in Convent Garden, said the following:

"Apple care support is worldwide. Your phone is covered in Brazil under this. So, you need to take it to an apple authorized technical support center and if, like in your case, it needs to be replaced, they would have replaced it."

He even told me that whilst in Brazil, he visited one of those centers to confirm this information.

So, are you saying that one employee of apple, that happens to be brazillian, has given me the wrong information?

I have the same problem, my phone went into a coma on Xmas eve, while I was on a skype call, I have tried everything on this website and I have had no luck, IUSACELL in Mexico say they will diagnose the phone in 24 hrs. I have never jailbroken the device and this seems to be happening a lot, from what I have been reading in the web. I depend heavily on my iPhone for work, I am due to travel tomorrow for work before new year and I am phoneless.

What is the most hands on solution apple can give me in Mexico if my carrier can't solve my problem by tomorrow morning?

I know this topic is quite old, but if anyone else reads this misinformation, it may discourage them from getting the proper care they require.

Apple will replace a iPhone/iPad/iPod from one country in another country!

I live in Canada and get all of my Apple products from the US because I can generally get them earlier and I'm a fanboy. I can get (and have had) any of those items warranty replaced at ANY Canadian Apple store. No questions asked.

I don't know where your information is from Tamara, but my experience speaks to the opposite.

(This is assuming that both countries are the same service type and that you purchased the phone through Apple and not a specific service provider - i.e. factory unlocked)
