Airplay audio cuts out intermittently

Hello, I'm having an issue with Airplay I can't seem to fix. When I play anything via airplay with my Ipad, Ipod touch, or Iphone, it will play OK for a minute or two but then the audio cuts out for 5-10 seconds. The audio comes back, but then it will cut out again repeatedly every few minutes. I am playing through my Airport express. I have two airport express units, and they both have the same issue no matter the source (Ipad, Ipod, or Iphone). I'm also using an Airport Extreme as my router. Since it's all Apple hardware you'd think it would just "work", but not in this case apparently.

I've searched for answers, here's what I've tried so far without success:

1) Disabled bluetooth on the source devices
2) Updated firmware on all devices
3) I've restarted/rebooted all devices numerous times
3) It's not a range issue, because I've placed the Ipod touch within inches of the Airport express. Same problem.

At a loss, any ideas folks? thanks.

That's great that this sorted the issue for you. However, I can categorically state that the root causes of this issue is not a "wireless" issue. At least not in all cases.

I can say that because in my setup, everything is wired. I'm playing from an iMac to a airport express plugged into the same a time-capsule (airport extreme) as the iMac. Mostly it cuts out when the volume is low (as I tend to have it at night - around 25% of full volume)). It can cut out for extended periods - several minutes, then may play again only for a few seconds before cutting out again. Most infuriating!

Additionally, I have wireless turned off on both the iMac and the express. Everything is up-to-date with the latest patches.

Whilst mostly at low volumes, it does occur at other times occasionally. Often with the express showing as unavailable as an airport device for a while before becoming available again.

And the plot thickens...my shatty Dell E5420 laptop is able to play the same song without skipping, over my wireless no less (good to know my wireless network is configured properly)! Two additional troubleshooting steps I just tried:

*Ran a continuous ping to my A/V receiver, all pings are <1ms.

*Downgraded from Bonjour 3.0.0.10 to Bonjour 2.0.2.0, no change.

I'm now going to try upgrading to iTunes 12.2 which just came out today. I'm absolutely stumped by this!

I'm beginning to believe this issue has something to do with my NIC/NIC settings/NIC driver or a BIOS setting. I just ran a Wireshark trace and I see the following right when I get my first stutter (and subsequent stutters):

User uploaded file

192.168.1.71 is my main PC that has the stuttering, and 192.168.1.75 is my Yamaha RX-V473 Receiver. I sadly can't make heads or tails of this, and Google is proving less than helpful. I'm now investigating the following thread:

Time to relax for the rest of the evening and get back to troubleshooting tomorrow...joy.

I have high-speed comnet and reasonable wireless coverage in a single room - and yet with the router ethernet-connected to my apple TV unit (100 mbps) I still lose sub-second skips from music playing on either my MacAir (worse) and my iPhone 5s (not as bad). but the "skipping" sound is maddening considering that I always have PERFECT bluetooth connections to a Bose independent speaker and a Beats Pill. Movies usually work (sometimes die and lose connection but no skipping). I have the only available connection to my amplifier - the optical connection - but I thought that would be perfect. Oh well - have two of these. I wish I used a Microsoft PC (sort of) then I'd use chromecast or miracast.

Hi all

The main issue isnt with your routers, wifi or device - its Apple's IOS at fault !!!!

This started happening to me as soon as we upgraded to ios 8.3 and beyond !

All devices brand new and old coming into our property have issues with AIRPLAY, only certain old devices such as iPods running IOS6.x work fully and stable

Complain to Apply as I am sick of the problem and informing them to correct this and their new MUSIC app

Nope, as I said its become an issue in later versions of the OS - new devices have come into our setting and they still have the same issue. My OLD ipod running its last version ios 6.x has no issues whatsoever

I wish Apple develppment team would stop messing with both the MUSIC app and associated AIRPLAY functions, we only gained transmitted track info a couple of revisions ago after they had been messing and issued the new versions without PROPER testing first !

I didn't read the whole thread thought. But I was facing the same problem (audio cuts out intermittently). I changed my network from 2,4 to 5 Ghz and the streaming is smooth/perfect. I cannot explain this because my LAN and WLAN are perfect.

set up: Denon AVR 4520, Airport Extreme first floor and my Home Cinema set up on the second floor works with the assistance of an Airport Express (wired connection with the Extreme) IPad for streaming iTunes collection.

I know this is a *very* old thread, but I just found this when trying to fix issues I was having with dropouts from iTunes to Airport Expresses, using an Airport Extreme as my main router. WDS on, dropouts. WDS off, no dropouts.

As Apple may have discontinued their team working on routers, this is sad. We've been locked into the ecosystem, but now we're starting to slip out of the Apple world. This may be the last thing keeping us in. I'd like to extend my network, but if I'm going to use different hardware, I may go another streaming route (Chrome, Sonos, etc).

Anyone else see WDS causing issues?
