Cinema 23" - is this normal/acceptable?

Hi,

with a black background, the backlight is "bleeding" from the bottom. (see the picture: http://axu2.dnsalias.com/~axu/cinema.jpg )

there is total of 7 green, red and blue stuck pixels - but only 3 of them are barely visible other than totally black backgroud.

i also have a Viewsonic 19" display - cheapest you can buy. There is nothing like this.. that's why i expected more from this Apple Cinema, which was the most expensive in its class.

OK! So i got a new 23" display. Same **** quality. This time the stuck pixels are not so visible (have to be totally black bg and you barely see those few red and blue pixels), but it has the same uneven illumination!

All five Cinema 23" displays i have seen, has the same problem, so i guess this is a "feature". Those screens looks very beautiful at the store, because of the good illumination in the stand. But if you take the lights out... omg never seen such poor displays.. so what going on? do they manufacture these at several places and factorys? is there a faulty production line somewhere?

It seems that the uneven illumination depends on how the panel is attached to the frame. When pushing the panel from right places with fingers, I can correct the picture... :/

i put one more picture here:

- Rev A titanium PowerBook G4 400MHz (the furry one 🙂
- My new replaced Cinema 23"
- IBM Thinkpad T43 year 2005

All displays are set to highest brightness and the background is 100% black.

the CinemaDisplay costs 1400euros - about the same as the thinkpad laptop and look at that smooth illumination.. :o

I'm now waiting for answer from Apple technician. The support person told me on the phone that there have been some problems with the illumination before... sad that i got two faulty panels. 😟

I recently purchased a 23" cinema display as well. I went to watch a movie last night to check it out, I had a bad leakage of light on the screen as well (not as bad as yours though). I have 3 stuck pixels (red/green/green).

I wouldn't be as upset, except EVERY display I have from apple has several stuck pixels. I have a 17 in powerbook, 15 in powerbook, 60GB iPod, and now 23 in Cinema Display - ALL of them have stuck pixels. Honestly, I would expect better from apple.

Not sure what I will do next. I didnt think anything of it with the powerbook, because I knew that some displays had that. Then I got a powerbook at work with a nice blue pixel in the middle. Then my wife bought me the ipod with a nice white spot on the right of the screen, and now the display.

ugh.

Yeah, It is kinda tough. I love apple products as a whole, and I will never go back to the PC world. However, I just wish I could get something without any issues. Ha.

I think I am going to pursue something with this, after 4 different displays - I dont want to always get stuck with the bad displays/displays that have problems. I am going to run a few pixel checker tests and such, but I think the new cinema will need to be replaced.

My G4 Powerbook has been GREAT, and the stuck pixel wasnt so bad on that. As for heating, I always have fans running nearby as the cpu fans are constantly kicking in.

That's strange because the occurence of dead pixels should be very rare these days because of improved manufacturing techniques. Concerning the iPod I'm pretty sure there is a zero dead pixel tolerance, so you should be able to have it replaced. As fot the other displays, geez. A relative recently purchased a 24" Dell display, and I was pretty sure that there would be lots of dead pixels. Luckily for him there were none and the backlight is very even and nice, unfortunately the design is awful. But even Dell who makes cheap ugly products can get backlighting right.

OK! Case is closed.

They called from Apple today. The display is within the apple specs and they told me that i have two choices:

- keep the display
- return it to store and get my money back (based on 7 days money back guarantee of local consumer protection law)

Apple has seen the same pictures i have posted here, and they made their decision based on these pictures. I'm little bit of disappointed about the quality of Apple displays if this is their normal quality... :/

i think i'm going to visit local store and see if there is better quality panels from Apple or other manufacturer (Dell?) and get the money back from this one.

Aki,

I'm in the same boat. Originally bought my 23" from Apple online and immediately noticed 13 bright stuck pixels and 1 dead pixel. Shipped it back to them but the replacement unit was just as bad. I also noticed your problem with the backlight leaks on the replacement. After two defective units Apple allowed me to return it to the store instead of shipping it back to them. I convinced the store employee to let me open it in store. The first unit we checked out had very obvious bad pixels. After that they told me I could only open one more and then that's all they could do for me. The second monitor's pixels seemed fine but it was too bright in the store to do any real backlight tests. I decided to bring this monitor home only to find the worst backlight leaks yet.

So, this brings me to where you are now. I'm going to return this unit and get my money back. After this many bad monitors I don't think I can trust Apple to have a monitor that I'll find acceptable. Sidenote: I use a 30" Apple display at work that is perfect... maybe something is off with these 23" displays?

Have you found a replacement yet?

Thanks! C.J. Sanders
