Airport printer compatibility, Canon

Hi All,

Finally i am going to bite the bullet and get a new printer to plug into my airport express. Wireless printing yeah. In fact i have been using a cheap hp printer with gimp print but its just a pain.

Can anyone tell me the best cheap printer thats compatible with airport? I had cannon recommended to me due to the cost of ink replacement. Went to the ifelix page and took it down to the shops and you guessed it, could not find one of the models listed in i felix. They did have the pixma 1600, and 1000 but neither is on the list. They are new models. Anyone got any up to date news on models and compatibility? recommendations perhaps?

thanks all.

Joe

Hi all.

Thanks but no reply on this one yet. Was hoping there
would be an canon printer guru out there that could
make a recommendation. Actually any current model
canon printer that works well with airport would be
good. Thanks anyway

I have a iP5200 running on an AEBS. Works well for me printing from a Mac, PC & Wireless. The only drawback is that you can't use the Canon Utility app when connected to the AEBS. However, the Canon appears to save it's settings to the printer itself. So you can hook it up directly to your Mac and make your changes, then hook it up to the AEBS/AX. All should be good (it's been working for me so far---knock on wood). You probably only need to connect directly when doing a cleaning or aligning printer heads.

Hope this helps.

I'm using a Canon i960 printer over Airport Express for both of my computers. Printing is very reliable.

Have a look at your System Preference>Print & Fax panel. For the printer:
Sharing - should not be activated
Printing - highlight the printer and then select Printer Setup (on the middle right side of the panel). Select "name and location" on the ensuing drop-down menu on the panel. Location ought to be directed to the wireless name assigned to the Airport device. Select "apply changes". That ought to clear up any print problems.

As previous mentioned in this thread, I can only access the Canon Maintenance Utility when the printer is plugged directly into a USB 2.0 port, which I find a bit of a nuisance. Wish there was an easy work-around.

Hi all,

Thanks all. A good assortment of replies here. I am still quite confused though. The S520 i borrowed worked ok initially, but then it gets annoying. It sometimes hangs half way through a doc printing and if you put a few items in the cue.

Took a look at the new 5200. One post said it was great, then two others reported hang problems. It seems the problem is with the airport express firm ware. Need to downgrade it!!! One reply recommended that i go 5200 R printer from cannon. Wireless printer all inbuilt and just not worry about airport. This sounds terrible. A built in feature that does not actually work properly after firmware upgrade. I have already bought two printers and neither worked well on AE.

Now come on Apple. Firstly Apple must be able to recommend a printer, if not please dont offer the feature on the product. Ifelix is useful but can be unreliable and out of date. I just want to buy a printer that works on AE without all the little glitches. I been getting glitches on my ipod and .mac backup software and other software after upgrades.

My appologies for the rant but i am wasting a lot of time lately on glitchy stuff.

Has anyone tried the epson c86. One reply said that it worked flawlessly. Any other opinions?

I had an Epson C84 working on the Airport Extreme base station for just under two years. I could never do utilities like nozzle check or ink check unless I connected it USB right to my G4 ibook. That was ok, and I lived with it. However lately all the nozzles went kaput on the C84. I have seen forums reporting a lot of clogged nozzle problems with these. New heads are too expensive to bother with.
So I just purchased the Canon pixma iP6600D and plugged it into the airport. So far, so good. Two ibooks are printing, and color printing quality is a nice upgrade. I am looking forward to much lower print cartridge costs as well.
I do not know about Airport Express, sorry to say.

Personally, I find the wireless printing on both the Extreme and Express VERY flaky. Sometimes it will go weeks to months with no issue. Then I can't print anything. A re-boot of the offending computer usually works.

Its very strange too. If I jack straight into the computer it works flawlessly. So to me, the drivers must be fine. Other times I get timeout, unable to connect. I have tried several printers (HP and Canon) and they are are intermitten.

If anyone is considering using this routers as wireless printing devices, don't count on it. It doesn't work very well in my history (almost 3 years with the Extreme, 2 with the Express).

I am SO frustrated...

My experience has been quite the opposite. Using a Canon i960 printer and AE has proven to be a very reliable combination.

If you haven't read it, see my post above for possible remedies to your problem.

I've had the hp psc 1210 for over three years and now bought the 1310 principally because it's the last one to use the hp56 ad 57 cartridges which have a relatively huge capacity at 15ml. The replacement model performs exactly the same but it's cartridge capacity is only 4 ml -and for not much less money. The problem with these printers, like most psc printers is compatibility with your Airport Extreme/Express. They're listed by everyone as incompatible, but that's not true. I've pasted in below the directions I sent someone else.

I haven't done it with the 1410, but I have with the 1210 and the 1310. The secret is to download the HPIJS driver with the ESPGS driver. Go to: http://www.macworld.com/2005/05/julymobilemac/index.php?pf=1 and use the links there for the download for your printer. Before you do, uninstall the driver from hp that came with your printer, and delete your printer from the printer list. After you download the drivers open Printer Setup Util and hold down the 'option' button as you click on Add printers. This will give you an extra option in the drop down window -Advanced. Click on that, then select AppSocket/JetDirect. Put in the name of your printer (probably, hp psc 1410 series) and for the URI it's socket//10.0.1.1:9100
Then in the dropdown below that select HP which will give you a dropdown for all the models. Your download should be in there, look carefully because it may be at the beginning of the psc printers, alphabetically, if the hp part came out in lowercase.
click on your model and then on ADD. Your printer should work fine now. Although the other functions such as scanning require you to be plugged in.
If your using a PC then just download Bonjour for Windows and it will add the printer with no problems.
Hope that helps,
marc
