imovie '11 now really slow

imovie has recently got really slow, about 1 minute to load with events and projects loading one by one in slow time. Also slow to open a project with an additional wait with "loading project' while it actually opens.
I dont have too many projects, 5 in total, though there is a lot of source video in events - but no more than there was a couple of weeks ago when t was working nice and fast. 4GB RAM and a few hundres GB of hard disk space available.
Any ideas?

Hi Tim

I just stumbled over kind of a Solution - IF You are in a type of Hurry and can get Your self to taking an un-orthodox approach.

To understand why my iMovie had some peculiarities - I did as I recommend others -

Create a new User Account and log into this.

To my surprise iMovie was quick and Happy again.

So if one project is in haste and You can see Your self to re-import material and re-do it You'll be ready in time - I guess.

To export over from one User to another - You can do this by Using an external Hard Disk and then

• IT MUST be - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - NOTHING ELSE WILL DO for Video !

• Should be a FireWire one ( You were in a Haste ? Wasn't You ? )

• in iMovie export over Project including Events

And You will be of in the new User Account

Yours Bengt W

I upgraded from a 2006 mini to a fully spec.ed out 2012-2013 iMac (i7, with fastest graphic card, fusion drive), and I'm still waiting 1-2 minutes to switch between projects with less than 5 minutes of content (no themes).

I now see this problem has been around for years, and the user led solutions are as dodgey as the problem.

Opening a smaller event does dramatically improve the time to switch between projects, but then to reopen my iPhoto library as an event, then takes 1-2 minutes, and then I have to re-locate the clip I wanted for the specific project.

Disappointed? Oh yeah! 😮

So discouraged. I bought a Mac because I heard it was the ultimate for media. My experience with IMovie has been a nightmare. It is so slow. On top of that, if I even attempt to browse the internet while it uploads videos from my camera, the windows freeze and drag. I have plenty of memory and power. Almost brand new. Can someone who uses macs recommend a better movie editing program?

It's funny you should say that, my mum's imac has been Slow just recently i upgraded to Mountain Lion and it's now fine.

But if you like your editing i would suggest you buy Final Cut X as i have been using this since it was released and Imovie just sits in the background now. Final Cut X has heaps of gear installed and there is many plugins you can also buy.

Also did you buy a second hand Mac or new from the shop, I have been running a Mac Pro Tower with 30 inch cinerma display since 2007 and have had zero problems.. i would say thats 6000% better than windows.

I've been having the same prob. HD film, every ckick would show me the little colour wheel for 30 seconds or more (I timed it). I tried a few things but the only thing that worked was removing half the footage from the project window so it was under 15 minutes. Thats fine for me cause i'm chopping in other clips anyway but not good if you have a lot of footage i spose.

This is amazing! I figured it was all my fault. Over the past 6 yrs I have tried to improve performance with most of the suggestions on this site without ever reviewing any of them. It started just like most of the examples. All was great early working with imovie, however as I continued using imovie I started having all the issues everyone has described. I tried everything from purchasing ext. 3 tb drive and moving all the projects off the internal hd etc and only working on one proj at a time. I have more ram etc, etc, and as all everyone has described in this forum the performance ***** and renders working in imovie useless unless you want to stare at your screen and wait for something to happen for hours on end. the workflow is beyond anything I can explain. i'm in healthcare and all of my customers would have thrown me and my product out and demanded a refund yrs' ago. i can't understand why this as gone on this long without a lawsuit. i guess none of us are lawyers.
