Cracked Screen while charging

I recently purchesed an 1pod touch (4th generation) for my daughter for Christmas, she went to charge it and when she went to check on it, the glass was cracked. It did not fall, it was in the same place where she left it. The crack is located near the home button. The ipod still works, just wondering if anyone else has had this problem

I have had the same thing happen with the 8gb 4th Gen Ipod Touch I brought for my daughter for xmas. It was left on charge for 2 hrs and when we checked to see if the charge had completed we found the screen craked. I have just been to the Southampton Apple Store (Genius appt) and they would not replace it, as the device is still working they are saying the only way it could be damaged is due to either being dropped or something falling on it. They did offer a refurbed replacement for ~£100 but I declined the offer.

The only reason i could think that would happen is if there was a sudden power surge/ and or the power chip overheated causing extreme heat to emanate from the power cord causing a minor fracture near the home button (where the power chip is located). Having said that, i would bring it to an apple store and let them take a look at it to see if something else was damaged.
