Consider the weight & size when "running".
Watch out for bending when choosing a backpack
Ottorbox & Temple cases.
Holds up to a 4 year old, but probably not a bear or a disc golf course. 😉
There is no question in my mind that the iPad is plenty rugged to be put in a case and packed in a backpack. No reason that you should bend it or stress it. The question is, why would you want to add a pound and a half, and have to wear a pack for a 5k. A 5k is so short. Your training runs are all going to be short. I'd say carry a small amount of water if you want to in a running belt, or a jersey pocket. Use a nano, or at most an iPod touch. Go light, go fast. You will be running 3 miles before you know it. Light is more fun. Get the iPad for everything else in your life.
I carry my iPhone in a small camera case in a Nathan fuel belt a lot. You can get all kinds of apps for running. They use gps to measure time and distance, and you can upload to websites that keep your running history as soon as the run is over, assuming you are in service.
Thanks for the vote of confidence rmcmpastor, I'm not giving up, but it's doubtful I'll ever go fast LOL
The bottom line is I can not afford multiple devices. C25K is just one facet I need to consider. Living without a pda, which was also my mp3 player is tough. 😉 Part of the reason I'd consider the iPad is because I tried to use my pda as a reader. It wasn't very comfortable. And a bigger view of iCal would be cool.
