Wifi connection keeps dropping - Any ideas?

Hello!

We've just bought two last generation iPod Touchs (which we updated with the new iOS 4.2.1), and we can't seem to maintain a stable WiFi connection on either of them - they keep dropping the WiFi connection. Since we are also operating two 3rd generation iPod Touchs (also updated to the last version of the iOS) on the same WiFi network, and neither of these are having that problem, we're leaning towards a problem either with the 4G units themselves (a faulty batch) or a problem with that generation.
Anyone have the same problem? If so, have you found a way around it?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Cheers!

I don't see any feedback here from anyone who has backed off an 802.11n wireless network to just 802.11g as a test. If your wireless router does both 802.11g and 802.11n, then the 4G iPod Touch units will attempt to connect to the available 802.11n network. Previous generation iPod Touch units, do not support 802.11n, so they would all join available 802.11g networks only.

I don't have a 4G Touch, so I don't know if there is any way to override attempts to make 802.11n connections, but I suspect there is not. So, one way to force the issue is to not have any 802.11n networks available to see if it makes any difference in your ability to connect.

Bidaz,

Careful who you call "fan boy". If I ever could find a valid Apple WiFi bug, I'd be the first to file a bug report and post it here.

My advice on WiFi issues are based on several years of observation on this issue in this discussion group - and time and time again, the problems revolve around routers, encryption, and network setup. And once in a great while, you get a touch with bad WiFi that needs service.

Mgssidley:

Note that although you can now wirelessly connect your iPod Touch 4G to your router, this has not really fixed your problem as much as it is a work around. Or, unless you don't care about not using 802.11n with its potentially higher speeds.

What it does reveal is that your problem was most likely related to failure to complete an 802.11n connection. I suggest that you should review your routers wireless configuration pages and compare your settings to this recommended in this Apple technical article when you set it back to 802.11b/g/n

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199

iPod Touch models prior to 4G did not support 802.11n, so for them, this would not have been an issue.

Please let us know the type of encryption you are using, if any (WEP, WPA, WPA2) and for 802.11n, the channel width (20MHz or "narrow", 40MHz or "wide")

A few things quick:
I was previously able to get wifi when the router was set to 11n/g however it would drop every 5-10 minutes. I guess I was wrong about changing it to only "g" as it still has problems. Sometimes it stays connected for a few hours then will randomly stop. Other times it happens during every song in Pandora and when the song is over, it just stops playing cause it can't stream the next one. My internet security is set to WPA2-PSK and AEP. All of the settings on the page you linked were what I had(all that I could find at least). My previous iPod Touch 2g worked just fine on this network. The router is an SMCWBR14S-N4. Something weird is that this problem happens the most frequently when Push Notifications are turned on. It also doesn't make a difference if every single app under the Push Notifications are set to Off, it still loses internet every couple minutes. It seems like having no Push Notifications on is when this lasts the longest but it still goes out every few hours.

Edit: I have also restored multiple times.

Let me pipe in on this one.....

I have a 2nd gen iPod Touch running ios 4.2.1, and I have the same problem. When I'm streaming music using Pandora, the music stops at various times within 30 minutes. I have a Belkin N+ router with up-to-date firmware. I was using WPA2 encryption until last night when I started experimenting. I changed my router settings to use MAC address filtering and removed the WPA2 encryption. The iPod Touch played without stopping for a number of hours. Tonight I will try using WPA encryption instead of WPA2 to see if there are any changes. I read somewhere that the iPod Touch doesn't play well with WPA2.

I believe the problem is in the way the iPod Touch and ios 4.2.1 handles wifi security.

I had a similar problem. I just purchased a 32 GB ipod touch 4G. The wifi connection was intermittent and slow. At times it would be fine, then would drop or just not connect. I thought it was the device.

In actuality, I was having interference on the wifi channel. I use an airport extreme current gen base station. All I had to do was to change the channel on the 2.4 Ghz from 1 to 9 and now it works great. The concept is that the router acts like a cordless phone. On a cordless phone if there is static on the line, the line will change. Basically, I just had to get a clear line.

I have a Droid with wifi analyzer on it and I have analyzed the wifi signals in my building. The channel my router is on is completely different than any other router in the building.

In addition, I tried streaming the iPod Touch with standard WPA encryption this evening, and the music stopped again. I'm back to an unencrypted signal to test it, again.

I'm still convinced there is a problem with the way ios 4.2.1 handles wifi WPA encryption.

when i picked B/G radio band autochange to standard - 20mhz channel

about wide channel : i got 3 - 11

standard channel : from 1-2.412ghz to 13-2.472ghz between

________________________________

and about my wireless security mode
my current sitting is :

WPA2-Mixed
Encryption TKIP or AES

more option in my router :

Hi,

I've been having this problem with my network too. I've got a 3rd Gen iPod Touch and every 10 - 30 minutes the iPod will just loose the connection for no reason. In the settings it states its connected to my netgear router and gives me a correct IP, but when I check the router it shows its not connected. I have to disconnect and then reconnect to get anything working.

Its got something to do with the iPod Touc and not anything else on mine as I've got quite a few things connected via WiFi including an AppleTV 1st Gen which doesnt loose the connection.

PROBLEM SOLVED 🙂

my device is working like a charm with no connection drop off anymore
its all about the routers as they mentions not on da device itself
with sum router tweaks it will work perfectly ...
thanks very much for Bruce Thomson who found the main problem at 802.11n signal
also special thanks to (luvlabs) and everybody who support us

good luck 😉
