Kernel Panic on MacBook Pro, brand new.

HI!

I have done a lot of research on the kernel panic. It happens on Safari, and I have done all I think I can do based on what I have read on these forums. (PRAM, reinstall OS, repair permissions, ditch safari prefs, etc)

Another odd thing is that it only happens when my 24 inch cinema display is plugged in.

Here is the part that seems to be the most important.

This is the part that is consistent in every crash...

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHDGraphics(6.2.4)@0x82738000->0x827e6fff
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6)@0x7a896000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2)@0x81fbe000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2)@0x82005000

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Safari

---------
Is there a way to replace this?
com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHDGraphics(6.2.4)

--- I HAVE replaced the OS and it happened again.

Safari issue? Plug in issue? Flash issue? Like I said, it's only when I am browsing, and it happens .

Could it be a RAM or hardware issue? Something with the display?

Anyone?

THANKS!!!

Fuse you have exactly the same error and setup, so the same applies as Nerdgerl...

You might be able to demonstrate via this thread, that many others have encountered the same issue. Its a hardware fault with the mid 2010 MBP's.

A new logic board is going to be costly. If they admit its a factory issue they might replace even though its out of warranty.

@fuse_85

On my last mbp (mid 2009) I had to replace the logic board due to a serious problem. Hopefully it was still under warranty, but replacing the logic board is about (here in France) 1450€ (just for the board, no replacing cost included). Now that I've this problem on my out of warranty mid-2010 MBP, I think I'll have to do with it ... or buy a new one instead of getting it repaired ! The only option you have is to download and install gfxCardStatus and set it on "Integrated Only" so your computer won't use the nVidia card anymore.

I think I solve this issue of "NVRM Read Error".

I created an standard account and logged in with the account.

I found with this account it worked fine.

So I thought this issue must have relation with the S/W, not H/W.

And I stopped the gfxCardStatus and ran Safari, Flashes, and Played avi files and no pannic happened.

If the panic with "NVRM read error" occurs, stop any S/W that controls video card such as gfxCardStatus could be the solution.

i've done that too, but i think you've installed gfxcardstatus on your main-account right? and i think that settings (integrated only) has been copy to the new account.

is there a method to check which card is active without using gfxcardstatus?

Same problem here (2010 late) with nv330m. It was occurring on 10.6.8 so I've upgraded to 10.7...even worst:(

It occurred 12 times since 1.5 days (half day without using it).

I found that increasing the fan speed may help while I'm just browsing, but it definitely dies under wow or any 3d games.

I've an open ticked with apple care now and will take it in at Monday to a service. AHT doesn't reveal anything, but if the notebook is hot enough, it will freeze up in the AHT as well.

My above solution was not correct. I had 2 more same painc(NVRM Read error) for 3 days. 😢

gfxCardstatus seems not the origin of this panic.

I've found that after this error, some files were corrupted and I should have repair disks from DVD booting.

But this is not the exact solution. Another panic occurred after some time.

If I can replicate this panic, I'll take this machine to the Apple Store, but this happens very rarely(About one time a day), and AHT and TechTools Pro says my machine is okay.

After fighting with this issue, I managed to find the replication for me.

STEP 1. Create A Standard Account for test.

STEP 2. Connect a external display

STEP 3. Log in with the test account

STEP 4. Open Safari, and play a flash movie within the Safari (such as CNN news)

STEP 5. Open MS Powerpoint for mac

I don't know if this works for others, but this works for me: Could see the black screen caused from NVRM Read error

I'll show this to the Apple staffs tomorrow.

I hope this could be helpful to others who have struggle with this issue.

This is just soooo frustrating. The big Apple...listen the story:

I bought my MBP 15" at March. Realized there was a dead pixel on the screen. Called Apple, they have been very nice, replaced the screen. Within 3 months, realized the charger has contact failure. The battery showed 50 cycles, even though I have never unplugged it from charger. They have replaced it as well.

Two weeks ago, I had the same issue as all of you guys (still 4 months old laptop). I have brung it to the same service yesterday. I was pretty upset of course, due to the third issue. They have replaced the motherboard as well. I just took it to home right now and I couldn't even turn it on anymore!!!

I've just called the Apple, spoken with Kevin (supervisor or what so ever). They are very sorry to hear the whole story, but there is no refund, no compensation, no flexibility at all. They don't care about the series of problems, just basically take what you got.

Is this the legendary Apple Care? What is the hype about then. I've been planning to buy a new Mac Air as well, but it looks like the trust is a weekness even in Apple products.

So, the long story in short: they should replace the MB due to the video card issue, without further questions. (if you have no warranty, or series of problems then just f..k off)

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

  1. Last Modified: 12 October, 2011

Symptoms

Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011.

Products Affected

Resolution

Apple is aware of the issue and is working on a solution. Keep your software up-to-date using Software Update.

I don't get "kernal panics" but mine has starting to do the same thing with the blanking screen and it goes straight to sleep, I wake it up but keeps wanting to go to sleep (or actually I don't think it goes to sleep the second time, just stays blank and I end up having to shut down or restart to get it back going). Is this the same thing happening?
