Touch screen going crazy

For the past few weeks, the touch screen goes crazy as if an invisible finger is touching the screen in random locations. This happens regardless of if I am holding the iPad in my hand or not. I could be reading a web page and having the opah on the desk and in random it happens.
I am not using any screen protector and there are no scratches on the screen.
The iPad goes in this mode in random and it is not linked to any specific application.

The way to get it out of this mode is to hit the power button once and then unlock the screen.

Does anybody else have this issue?
Any solution to this?
Is my ipad broken?

Thanks
Sam

Hi Tiger San,

Try:
1. Power cycle the iPad, turn off and then back on.
2. Hard reset; hold both the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
3. Factory restore by attaching to iTunes, but back up all information first so you can restore it.

If none of these steps work, in ascending order of course, then a visit to the Apple Retail store genius bar is in order. Not responding to these steps means a faulty touch screen.

Hi. Had the same problem on my Iphone 4S and my son's Ipod 4. The screen was going crazy: we could try to click somewhere and it seemed to click anywhere making it impossible to use the device. We were rebooting to solve the problem but it kept getting back. After a while, we noticed the same as Happy 12, it only happened when charging but necessarily fully charged but only when using certain chargers and sorrily not Apple brand. As soon as we disconnect the Iphone or Ipod, everything returns to normal. It makes it scary to think that a charger can have an impact on the response of the screen ...

Some others have had similar problem and resolution was to replace the iPad. However, a reset, or restore from backup or a restore to factory defaults may resolve the problem if it is a software corruption problem. If it still happens after a restore to factory defaults then I would call either AppleCare or make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it is likely a hardware problem.

Not quite the same problem but my screen goes into large mode and I cannot get out of it. The screen has everything so large just finding the slide bar to get it started is almost impossible, then for no apparent reason it goes back to normal size. Only had the i-pad since Xmas and wondering if I should get Apple to change it just in case it get's worse.

Weird!

Mine is doing the same thing, our grandson was playing an app and the screen size went to off the scale, hard even to find slider to turn on. press the re-set button and screen goes normal for a second then back to off the screen size. leave a few minutes then it goes back to normal on it's own. Thought the little rascal had some how downloaded a virus. Should I get Apple to re-place as it is only 3 months old

I'm also having this issue but with my iphone 4. I restored several times and the effects still return. I also experience the "dead strip" where and entire horizontal strip about the width of your finger has no effect, usually right above the dock icons. I've got to Apple and to humor them them sent me home telling me NOT to restore but to just sync your music/apps etc. to a "new" phone. during my process I decided to play around with the scrolling of languages you can choose prior to full activation and the dead strip effect appeared, proving it is not my restores effecting the phone but the phone itself.

In short, if you're experiencig any of the effect people have mentioned above, it's best to replace your product. It's a clear defect of the device itself.

NOTE: I use one of those static screen protectors and the effects occured whether it was on or off. The screen is NOT effecting the defective phone.

Cheers, hope you all have Apple Care 😉.

I've had this issue for months, tried a restore as new, restore from backup, restore via DFU. Nothing helps, the problem is random and even after locking the screen it may not fix it and I just get frustrated. After about 5 mins it works again or I'd have to do a hard reset. I'm going to record the wonkiness via my iPad and post it here. I'm out of warranty so does anyone know how much Apple charges for this up here in Canada?

Well in my case, I was using an Apple charger. Worth mentioning is that the iphone was sitting next to a laptop. So maybe the combination of being fully charged, still plugged in, and near electronic interference.

The crazy screen does not happen when it is unplugged, and still near the laptop. SO it has something to do with being plugged and near other electronic device that emit somewhat strong field.

I just bought my ipad and im having the same problem! I tried out different chargers but nothing changes! Very strange, i did some "tests" and could realize that the charger dont even need to be inserted into the ipad, just geting it close to the lighting connector will strike the problem.

Im really ****** off with this problem! This is the forth day of my ipad! Now starts the battle to get a mine replaced!

At last! I think I have the solution for all of us:

I've been in the same situations, except my iPhone 5S gone crazy even if not plugged...

I've searched a lot on the internet to find a solution, that's why I'm here:

I tried a lot of things and multiple restaurations: Even during the installation, touch screen made those weird stuffs...

I finally downloaded a brand new firmware for my iPhone 5S (iOS 7.0.4.ipsw) to restore it on my iPhone. It exists for iPads as well.

You can find it through a search by your own on the internet, it's easy to find 😉

It seems our problems are not an hardware ones finally, but seems to be due to some corrupted files at the root of the phone's (or iPad) software.

After downloaded, open iTunes after have plugged your device and press ALT+"Restore" (MAC) or CTRL+"Restore" (PC) to choose the firmware downloaded earlier.

wait for the restauration done... And voilà 🙂

Worked fine for me: No touch screen issues anymore.

Hope that helped.

I have been having a similar issue with my iPad Mini. The problem started with a small dead area about 1/2" x 1" at the top left edge of the screen. Then one spot near that would ghost tap constantly. It would do this about 30 seconds after turning on the iPad. This has gone on for about the past 2 weeks.

Not sure what prompted me to try this but I thought maybe heat might resolve the issue.

I got a corn filled heat bag that my wife has and heated it up for 2 minutes in the microwave. I Placed the bag on my iPad Mini and left it there until it cooled.

I have now been using my iPad Mini for the past 2 hours and no problems. The dead spot is gone and no more ghost typing.

Can't really tell you why this works or if it will work for anyone else but when I did it I thought I can't make it any worse because it was unusable as it was.

Hope this helps someone else.
