Bootcamp Assistant Problem

After I setup my new MacPro. I tried to get Bootcamp working. Version 3.0.4 of the Bootcamp Assistant Downloads the new Windows Support Files but it won't burn a cd As Bootcamp Assistant Zella me it would. Is it a known Problem in the New Version and how can I resolve the issue?

MacPro, Mac OS X (10.6.6), Bc Assistant 3.0.4

Hi,

This is a known issue with the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.6) and Boot Camp Assistant. Spoke with a knowledgable rep yesterday and am pretty confident a update is going to be released soon to fix the issue. In the meantime you can safely install a Windows OS just like normal, just instead of selecting the option to download the file for "your Max" when running Boot Camp Assistant select the option that says you already downloaded it. Then just complete the Windows OS like normal. After the Windows install finishes just insert your Mac OS X Disc 1 to install it's version of Boot Camp drivers, reboot and then run the Apple Update to get version 3.2.

That should work fine, I did it yesterday on a new system we got. Still don't have a good understanding of what this "Windows Support Software" is that Apple has introduced but was told by a reliable source that it's more of a Windows installation guide and for those that are familiar with installing Windows on a Mac it won't really do much.

Anyone hope this helps.

Thanks to all for the answers. As a temporary solution I used the MacOS X MacPro disc as unidesk_ch and others suggested.

@N.Carroll Those screenshots are exactly what happens, but I have german language installed, which would be not as helpful, so thanks for posting the screenshots.

And to all the thread wasn't hijacked, it was exactly this problem. But I was out of town yesterday, so I could not respond earlier.

But I would appreciate that someone could post it here, when there is a final solution around.

Just spoke to Apple support on this issue. The only workaround available right now (evening of 1/7.11) is ugly - reinstall OS X with a version earlier than 10.6.6, then run bootcamp assistant and get Windows installed, and then and only then update OS X back to 10.6.6. Works for me since I'm just setting up my new computer with next to nothing on it, but for anyone else upgrading an older version of OS X... I guess it's good luck and wait for a patch from Apple.

Same issue, tried a blank freshly formatted 8gb FAT flash drive and the error came up.
I hope apple gets on this quickly, I have visual studio work to take care of for school next semester and I really don't want to jerry-rig this installation a different way.
I also got the grey screen of death today while on iMovie, 10.6.6 is not going well at all.
The app store works, so i guess thats a good thing.

Currently there are two solutions to get around this issue.

First, find a copy of bootcamp assistant 3.0.2 and use that to setup bootcamp instead. Time machine backups are a great source for this.

Secondly and probably the easier way is to just choose the option that says you have already downloaded the files, partition your disc and then install windows as normal. After windows is installed simply use your OSX install disc and the bootcamp drivers found upon it.

Until apple comes out with an official solution these are your options.

Same issue here. Thankfully the work around is extremely simple.

Interestingly after updating both my MacBook Pro and my girlfriend's MacBook to 10.6.6 I've got Boot Camp Assistant 3.0.4 while she's still on 3.0.2 with Software Update showing that her MacBook is up to date. Are different models supposed to be up to date with different versions?

Also, I may be way off but I suspect that for those of us with 3.0.4 installed the issue is that the server that is supposed to host the drivers, etc either isn't turned on or isn't responding. I just see the "barber shop pole" going around for a minute before it moves to the screen asking me to burn a disk or put it on an external drive. I think if it was actually downloading it would change to the pulsating solid colored bar and give some indication of it's progress, ie "Downloading 1.2Mb or 253MB", no?

I suspect you should hear that this is a bug. My issues were no different than those discussed. I was lucky enough to have a previous release of Boot Camp (3.0.2) on another machine, prior to this Windows Support download addition to 3.0.4. Everything appears to work now using that earlier release as the burn/save has never worked to any media or format is not part of it. I was unsure if a straight copy out of the previous version would work but it did! That's two major issues for me in one day, as the Windows 7 Home Premium DVD would yield, CDROM type 1 or 2 with no keyboard response. Apple needs to provide 3.0.5 with fixes ASAP! It appears this 3.0.4 version came off my new 10.6.3 Snow Leopard DVD and this was my first install/upgrade and all my other MACs are on 10.6.6 but they were upgraded via an earlier Snow Leopard install. Need to start going to Google first 😟

You were correct, I did exactly that using 3.0.2 and the install was minus the Windows Support burn/copy request. The important thing is that it install the drivers for 3.1 Bootcamp and all I had to do was install the 3.2 driver 64|32 bit update. All icons and drivers in both MAC and Windows appear to be working fine. Restarts and updates all in proper places. Avoid Bootcamp if using the new 10.6.3 install disk and you see version 3.0.4 or you get the Burn/Copy request at the start of installation. Good Luck!

I have a i5 MBP, and installing Win7 tomorrow. Is it OK just to click that I already downloaded the drivers?, I was able to partition the disk already (by clicking the already downloaded options), so to install Win7 I will click the "already downloaded" option again and install will post back tomorrow with hopefully sucessful results!

Do you think I'll be ok?

Was this with the 10.6.6 update and BootCamp Asistant 3.0.4?

Surprised still no update from Apple regarding this issue. I was under the impression last week that a fix was imminent and was recommended to check their Support site the next day (Friday 1/7/11). I can only guess that they are holding off continuing to test or didn't want to release an update right after releasing 10.6.6. Some type of knowledge base article would have been nice but so far haven't even seen that.

The system I setup last week using the normal way (selecting the option that indicates you already downloaded the new software) is working fine so at least that work around seems fine. I'll update as soon as I see Apple release a fix.
