Bootcamp Assistant Problem

After I setup my new MacPro. I tried to get Bootcamp working. Version 3.0.4 of the Bootcamp Assistant Downloads the new Windows Support Files but it won't burn a cd As Bootcamp Assistant Zella me it would. Is it a known Problem in the New Version and how can I resolve the issue?

MacPro, Mac OS X (10.6.6), Bc Assistant 3.0.4

Been banging my head like everyone else on this thread...

I finally just lied and said I already had the stuff downloaded.

The installation was really straight forward and documented well.
(Print the guide from the boot camp assistant 3.0.4)

Now XP is installed and working on my MacBook Pro 13", however; without the drivers, it is pretty useless.

If only it would save the drivers at start, or I had received a copy of OS X when I bought my laptop last week....

Apple I'm disappointed.

The Windows remaining dark symptom is something other than a driver issue I believe. In the absence of the correct driver Windows 7 should default to an 800 X 600 display. By the way, on the dark Windows screen did you see a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of an otherwise dark screen? Windows can take an incredibly long time to boot on a Mac.

I had the same issue ejecting the disc and took the long way around--booted to OS X, removed the Win 7 disc, rebooted into Windows.

Fusion, Parallels, even Crossover are all options if you need to run Windows applications. My own personal preference is Boot Camp. With the others you end up with OS X and Windows sharing system resources. When I need to run Windows I don't have a problem rebooting into that OS even though it is time consuming. Others may find that they need to move more quickly between the two and would choose something like Fusion or Parallels.

I read the following on The Unofficial Apple Weblog recently:

"..Apple has dropped support for Windows XP. When setting up a Windows partition, Boot Camp requests an "...authentic installation disc of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate." XP isn't mentioned."

From some of the other posts here it sounds like this may be limited to the new MacBook Air, I hope that's the case.

Why would or should Apple continue to support XP? Even Microsoft has stopped supporting it. Time to give it up for a better, and supported, OS.

Not to argue, but I believe it was a driver issue. I downloaded them at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL995 and them copied them to a formatted USB drive (memory stick) as per the instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173

After my failed attempt at installing Win 7, I deleted the partition, and started over. With the USB drive in place, the Win 7 installation went as it should. No black screen. And no, there was no blinking cursor with the black screen.

After the successful installation, I loaded Boot Camp 3.1 from my OS X installation disk. Everything, including the wireless keyboard and mouse works as it should.

As frustrating as this has been, I agree that I want the code I use most often (the op system) to be stable. I'll fuss with the less-used code (B/C Assistant).

I am not sure that this is allowed on this thread, but after reading about the difficulties loading and using Boot Camp I decided not to try to set it up. Instead I loaded Windows XP and the Windows based programs I need to run for my business using Parallels. I am able to run Medisoft (a medical billing program, Quicken, Microsoft Office 2007 and am using Trend Micro Titanium as an antivirus. It's working great. This is my first Apple computer. My kids talked me into it, and I do love the way it works.

Hi all, having similar bootcamp problems and went to see a genius at the app store in Bath UK this morning. What was supposed to be a fifteen minute appointment turned into two hours!

Trying to install Windows XP on my brand new MBP OSX 10.6.6 Boot camp version 3.0.4 Had original windows CD, we tried skipping the download part as this is clearly faulty, got as far as partitioning and installing windows XP pro from CD. Then on first boot this message

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt <windows root>\system 32\hal.dll Please reinstal a copy of the above file"

In the store Matt, (nice helpful chap BTW) came to the conclusion that the CD was faulty (although I was doubtful of this as I have been very careful with it, only used twice and no visible signs of damage whatsoever) Asked if there was a forthcoming resolution to the boot camp download issue, was told that this problem had not been recognised officially by Apple yet so no date as yet. "Google it in a week"!?

When I got back borrowed a different Windows XP disc, reformatted and tried fresh install expecting a result, but no, same error message. Disc not the problem it seems. Also slightly older install disc but still original pristine condition, service pack 1 included. My disc has service pack 2 included. Different XP versions, same problem.

So I can't install Windows on my machine, and no help from the genius bar, and no sign of a resolution. So now faced with the difficult decision of whether to return the MacBook before the fifteen days are up, or hold on hoping that a solution will appear.

I need Windows for my IT degree. Spent two years saving for this computer, and despite Windows problems rather like it, but will have to go back to my 4 year old laptop.

Disappointed to say the least!

Still not sure if XP will ever work with BC 3.0.4, might have to shell out £110 ish for Windows 7 64 bit, but wondering if/when this will work as well. Apparently no issues with Boot Camp 3.0.2. If only I wasn't so keen with the updates!

Any ideas folks?

Nick.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info about service pack 1 not being supported, although as both discs returning same problem I do not feel this is the issue.

I need "Windows" for my course, as I said in my post, not particularly XP. I already own XP pro so this would have saved me having to spend more money buying Windows 7. Feeling pretty skint after the MBP purchase 🙂

Apologies if I sound a bit annoyed, not directed at anyone in particular, just not having the best of days!

Maybe you are right and I should bite the bullet and get 7.

BTW, you don't work for / have shares in Microsoft do you? 😉

Nick.
