Getting a Roman numeral

Shift i does not really produce a true Roman numberal one.
Is there a way to get that? thanks!

imac 27" (12/09) 13" macbook (4/08), Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Edit > Special Characters, View = Code Tables, Tab = Unicode, 00002150, look at 2160-217F.

Keyboard viewer seems more straightforward, but I suppose more limited.

Yes, keyboard viewer can only show what has been programmed into the keyboard layouts for various languages, which is small fraction of the total characters available. You can however use the Ukelele tool to edit keyboard layouts to include Roman Numerals or whatever you want, and then they will show up on Keyboard Viewer:

Tom, thanks, turns out by switching to Times from Helvetica the shift i now looks Roman. that is very convoluted. what about the more convenient character palette? thanks.

The instructions I gave are for the Character Palette, which is activated by doing Edit > Special Characters.

Sorry Tom, yes, I have the character palette in upper right menu with keyboard viewer. Keyboard viewer seems more straightforward, but I suppose more limited.
