iPhone 4, iOS 4
i deleted the facebook app on my iphone 4s, pressed the home button to leave the settings menu. nothing. pressed it again. nothing..tried the lock button. nothing..so now i am eternally stuck in the settings menu. and i need my phone working by monday morning. it's saturday now. and no shops sell alarm clocks on a sunday. if it is true that i have to buy a new phone i am going to burn my iphone in a satanical ritual. i get that they want to make money, but.. there is no way in the inner most ****** up cirkle of **** that i am paying 5 thousand norwegian kroner for a new iphone!
found it out online, hold down the home and lock button for 10 seconds, then the phone resets, or turns of and you can turn it back on. this worked for my phone at least. *whipes sweat from his brow* this helped for when both buttons were unresponsive. i don't have to waste money on a new iphone! weeeeeeeeee...
here's the link, it explains other problems as well. hope it helps!
Oooookey, I want to post the outcome of my Genius bar appointment.
The problem was with a jammed on/off button in my 9 months old iPhone 4S.
I just got off the phone with Apple Care and had a nice little chat with a manager called AL (Case number: #421500023)
Apparently, this is a known issue but their engineering department has not deemed this an issue to be a known manufacting issue. Therefore the only support that apple care can offer is a $199.99 replacement I-phone 4S. While the phone is currently out of contract, I feel that apple would have higher standards for their products and it really bothers me that the "engineering departmant" won't issue a fix for such a simple part failure!
File a complaint. They sweet talk all they can, don't forget they are not your friends, they want your money!! I got my case evolved as far as that they would give me an iPhone 4S for 50% off, so about $80 including tax. I'm still not satisfied as I agree this seems a simple fix and being stubborn on their part is very Apple unlike.
How do you file a complaint?
I want to as well, as I am still extremely angry at Apple for not supporting their product. I buy apple products because I expect quality. I will not be buying into that false notion anymore after this happened to 2 iPhones of mine. I wrote an email to the CEO, someone called me back, he stringed me along for a few days giving me hope that they could correct this issue, then he ultimately called me back and said the same thing Apple store said $ 199 and get a refurb phone. No thanks, I'm going to be spending my hard earned money on something else when it is phone upgrade time.
I had the same problem I went to the Apple Toy Store where they fix phones and the guy there gave me a temp fix. Got to settings, general, scroll down to accessibility, click the side arrow next to it. scroll down to Assistive Touch , open that and click it to the on position. A little white button will appear that you can place on the opening screen so you can turn your screen off. When you want turn off your screen touch the white button, touch device, then lock screen and off your screen goes. Like i said it is a temp fix but it works.
Didn't read all 29 pages so forgive me if this is a repeat answer, but I replaced my user's phone, but needed to power off the old one so I could activate the new one. Here's how I did it with the busted power button.
See this link: http://grownupgeek.com/how-to-turn-off-iphone-without-power-button
and look at the section "How to turn off an iPhone with no power button or a broken power button (no jailbreak)".
For those who can't browse:
1. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch and turn this feature ON
2. A white dot will appear in the upper left corner. Touch this dot
3. Touch AND HOLD the "Lock Screen" button and the Power slider will appear.
What's abusrd is the fact that I've seen people go to the Genius Bar with shattered iPhone 4 and 4s screens who have gotten replacements out of warranty, yet when I went in with a clear manufactoring or design flaw, nothing can be done. I've been faithful to Apple for years, but this is the last straw. I suggest everyone facing this problem submit complaints and negative feedback. It's a shame that Apple has come to this point. I'll be upgrading to a Galaxy 4S unless Apple gives me a reason to stick with them.
Mine too. I had this phone less than a year and tonight the power button JUST STOPPED WORKING. I can't do a soft reset. I have to wait til the battery dies or I have to go to settings and reset the whole thing which is a real pain. I am so disappointed. I got my phone at At&t I know they will send me to Apple, but I cannot afford a new phone.
ok--but now how do I get it to turn back on??? the power button is not working!!!!

If your phone is used for less than one year, it means it is on warranty. Do not worry, they will replace your phone with a new one for free.
This is a common problem and apple doesn't want to admit it! I have the iPhone 4 and it's just over two years old. I babied the thing and never had it out of a protective case. It was never damaged it was always on my belt. I went away and it stopped working. I contacted apple and because I was out of warranty they said I would have to pay the $35 which I said I wasn't paying as it's a common problem Apple has to fix the design. The lady came back on the phone and said that she really couldn't do anything for me and I probably had it in my pocket and it was damaged. Not a good thing to say as they are just making excuses. She said I could get a replacement iphone 4 for $169 plus taxes which I said no way as I can get a new Iphone 5 for that price with a three year contract. I'm going to try and push this issue with Apple as it's a design problem and every phone will have this problem until they change the parts and design. Hopefully it lasts until I can get out of my contract and I may move to a different phone if they don't fix things.
I found a fix, for myself atleast. My lock button has been stuck for the last 5 months. Last night I plugged my phone into my friends iHome and the button just popped up. I was sooooo excited! I did notice that I sort of forcefully put it on the iHome, so my suggestion to fixing it for you guys is to pop it in a iHome with some force. Good luck!
Probably this has already been mentoined (my apologies if it has), but I have the same issue, and plugging the phone into a Mac (or PC, I would assume), powers it on automatically as part of the sync process. So, you should be able to power it off using the assistive touch feature, and power it back on by plugging it into your computer. Of course, not very handy if you don't happen to have your laptop with you when you need to power on, but in a pinch...
