iPhone 4 Power Button Stuck

Out of the blue today the power/lock button on my iPhone 4 became completely unresponsive. It doesn't seem to be jammed and it actually seems to be loose and a bit wiggly. Now I can't restart my phone and I can't lock it. I was wondering if this was a common problem with other iPhone 4 units and what would be the best way to go about getting it fixed. I got this phone from a friend about a month ago who had only used it for about two months before switching to a different phone. Prior to receiving this phone I had been using an iPhone 3G for two years with no problems whatsoever. This iPhone 4 has not been dropped or exposed to water or humidity of any kind. Thanks in advance!

Just great, my power/sleep button has this exact problem where there's no click and seems like it is stuck. No response from it whatsoever.

I check my receipt for a possible warranty replacement and the warranty expired AUGUST 20, 2011! That's less than ONE YEAR and 4 MONTHS I had this **** phone and breaks just out of warranty!

I'm sure the local apple store will just make me shell out more $$$ to fix or replace this problem!

Will have a look at the EU legislation too, thanks. It'll be good to hear how peope get on with this. I've bought quite a few Apple products in the past (iMacs, Macbook Pro, iPad, previous iPhones), unfortunately the standard of customer service seems to be getting much worse the bigger and more profitable the company becomes.

After casting my eye around and about I've found an electronic shop who will repair for £60. This includes a 6 month gurantee which, if I wait a few weeks to carry out the repair, will take me just past the expiration of my contract with my network provider. £60 and a 6 month gurantee versus £119 and a 90 day gurantee with Apple, not much contest. I'll still be chasing re-imbursement for the cost of the repairs though.

Just had the same thing happen to me. One minute phone is working fine, next minute my Lock button is stuck. Doesnt click, wont turn phone on/off. Took it to apple store, bc it is past the one year warranty, no replacement / repair options other than $149 fo a new iPhone 4, so I just got the iPhone 4S. I've had every iPhone since the original was released and this is the first time I've ever had an issue. Would love to have had to fixed for a cheap amount, just letting you all know there are others out there affected.

It seems, that Apple redesigned the part located under the power/lock button in successor of iPhone 4. Below are pictures, which exemplify that fact. Photos (all come from http://www.ifixit.com/) are big, but I want to clearly show the difference.

Two first - the newest iPhone, two last - its predecessor. You can see whole part is smaller (narrower) and its orange/brown (copper?) element has black dot on center. It's also sticked to plate (protected by resin or something like that?).

My iPhone 4 on/off button has recently jammed/stuck and I just made a special train journey to my nearest apple store to be told that my phone is out of warranty (4 weeks approx) and their standard repair is to replace the phone for £119. I wish they had told me this when I phoned them, waste of time and a train fare to the shop. I googled the problem prior to my trip and there seem to be a lot of forums on this issue. Now sitting on the train home with the same problem. Not good!

Has anyone gotten any more information on this topic? My power button got "stuck" yesterday so I called Apple and they gave me the "you're out of warrenty, it will be $150 to replace it" speech. I bought Applecare on my 3GS and had that replaced 2 times for different issues but didn't get it it my iphone 4. The fact that the supervisor didn't know about the issue and didn't think it was common is really annoying because it is clear that breaking power butons are a common problem.

that's just business as usual when talking with Apple directly or with AppleCare - it is clearly a company-wide policy to deny any knowledge of ANY issues at all, they would probably deny that iPhone even has a screen for instance - if they just were told to do it... 😀

Hello everyone,

This problem seems to be persistent and due to normal wear and tear. I bought the iPhone 4 at launch, it was replaced a few months afterwards (apple store- phone could not be repaired/they replaced) and now the power button will not respond. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar and included a note letting them know that I would be driving 4 hours round trip for the appointment and if the problem could not be remedied at the store to please contact me to save me a trip. Well, no contact so I thought everything was in order for a phone repair/swap. I arrived, the rep looks at the phone and says- power buttons dead. It's going to be $149 to replace or you can upgrade to iPhone 4S. Wow! I really thought Apple would stand continue to stand by their product and correct the manufacturing problem.

There is a workaround fix for the problem- if you activate the "Assistive Touch" feature it will allow you turn the phone on and off and lock it through the touch screen. You must be running the latest iOS to use the assistive touch feature.

Best of luck to everyone. Maybe Apple will hear our voices.
