Q: Can you upload files from the iPad to a Web Browers

I recently received an iPad and I love it. I would also love to leave my laptop at home and only use the iPad while I'm away. One thing I think is missing for this to be possible is the lack of a native filesystem, as far as I know.

I know there are many apps that allow you to store and sync documents but I can't find a way to upload files to a website. For example, if I'm on a job site that requires me to upload my resume, the browse button on the browser is not active. I can't upload the files using the documents I've stored in Pages or in readdledocs.

Does anyone else think this is a major shortcoming?
Is there a way to do that I'm not aware of?

You assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

joe

Look in the app store for FTP apps, like FTP on the Go.

    Thanks for your suggestion, Tom.

I tried it but it doesn't seem to solve the problem I'm trying to solve.

I went to monster.com where it asks you to upload a file. The browse button for uploading the resume is not active so I can't upload a file.

I hope that there is some solution since this seems to be a major limitation for my purposes.

    Thanks, again,

    Joe

Safari won't let you upload files but some of the alternate browsers will. I've used iCab Mobile to upload photos to Flickr (which is not possible with Safari). Don't know about monster.com, though ...

Goodreader does uploads to a FTP site...easy!
It also downloads off a FTP site.
    I love that app.

It has s great file-folder system.
You can also use the open in to open in other apps.

No solution but agree that this is a need for the iPad to be a more effective business tool. Also could not find a way to get good reader to work for the type of problem you mention that I am struggling with as well.

The iPad and iOS lack a file handling system. As such, there's no way to hit a Browse button on some external site, drill down I to your iPad's file structure, and start a file transfer. This are all OS functions that just don't exist on mobile devices.

I think the only short term solution is to work from the other end; get another way to move files around by working with the vendor and pointing out that his website design doesn't support mobile, touchscreen devices. I think they'll change quickly, and probably provide so e sort of an interim solution also.

It's really unfortunate that Apple hasn't fixed this missing feature in, what, three years?  Our customers upload spreadsheets to our web site, and when asked why upload doesn't work on the iPad I have to explain that it's a limitation of IOS.  And if they want a mobile device which does this, they should look at Android (which finally got full upload capability in v2.2).

You can enable the Browse Button in Safari using an App you can find here http://bit.ly/o64KUd

That would require jailbreaking the iPad, coding it's warranty.

I had the same complaint. I actually stopped using my laptop for the iPad. It was frustrating having to go to the laptop just to upload a resume to career builder. I just downloaded iCab browser in the app store. I sent my resume to an external email account and signed in. You need to open the email through the iCab browser and download the file there. ICab has its own download drop box. I was able to them go to career builder and upload a resume without a problem. It may be a pain to start emailing files to yourself just to import them into the app but it's worth it not having to either copy and paste or go back to your laptop. Hope that helps and you found a job.

This option is really necessary for me and my work, I have no idea how to convert my files into text (http://www.to-text.net) without this feature and laptop.

What i do is uploading my files to my webspace using ftp client pro app. In most websites (forums) i can add the link to the file (mostly images) and voila the image shows up.
