How to upgrade 4 year old Imac

Hello,

My Imac seems to be running slower and slower. I am interested in upgrading, but dont need a whole new computer, the display, keyboard, mouse is fine. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Imac, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Sounds good Barbara. I already have an external HD. Now planning on doing as you say and moving the pics to it, and doing the cloud thing for back-up, getting an off site backup. Also planning on gettin snow leopard.

How do you access firewire? I only know the usb connections. Also do you know if I put all my photos on an external HD, will I still be able to run iphoto from there? If so how? Thank you for any input!

just figured out the firewire part, regarding the ram, do I need to get two since it is a dual core?
