VirusBarrier Express

So today I downloaded Virus Barrier Express. After downloading, my Mac became unresponsive; I began to get the spinning beach ball every time I tries to use a program/internet. At first I thought it was because it was still installing virus definitions. After those were finished, I proceeded to scan my mac, and it scanned without problem. After finishing however, my mac was still unresponsive with the spinning beach ball appearing as I tried to use a program/internet.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

As you have found out the hard way, most Anti-Virus apps are actually malware in and of themselves.

Doesn't matter where it came from, VirusBarrier is only second to Norton in a reputation for causing problems. If you read the guide Barney referred to and still wish to have AV software, a better choice would be [ClamXav|http://www.clamxav.com> or the recent free Sophos software (which I have no experience with, but which others here say works well).

Yes, it was from the app store. Everything is fine now though, I believe the problem occurred because after downloading, spotlight started indexing, which has made my mac unresponsive in the past. Thanks for all the help though.

What's the point of this anyway? No definition updates since the 28th of December, that's over two weeks. It doesn't spur confidence. I don't know where they're cutting corners in the free version of the program for something at full price they charge $50, but you'd hope it's not definitions. Waste of memory if you ask me.

I don't see how that could be a problem with VirusBarrier Express. It has no real-time scanner, so once you quit the program, it's not doing anything. It's only got a manual scanner.

VirusBarrier Express, while free, does not offer current protection in it's updates.
You can see this in the readme file, under updating defs

Yes.

I am using Clamxav and it identified 2 malware that Virus Barrier did not find "JS.Obfus-48" and ""Heuristic.Phishing.email.SpoofedDomain" The only problem is I cannot find out the function of these two malware.

got the same problem.my mac mini was totally bloced searchung for??? i even could not open the finder. Probably the problem was enhanced making a complete scan. but i am not so shure about mit as the slow down did not come up imediadetly. only after the virus barrier was removed, i could again use my mac mini
