Non Apple headphones with Ipod Nano - 6th gen

Hi All,
sorry for my silly question, but Im new in the AppleWorld. I have a brand new Apple Nano 6th gen and noticed that, if I use a regular (expensive!) headphones that I usually use while running, the sound is very disturbed and even the radio cannot play properly. Once I plug the apple headphone (the standard ones, sold with the ipod) everything turns back to normality..
Is it true?
Is there a chip in the device/headphone in order to work properly only with Apple/Apple's approved headphones?

Please, tell me it is just a joke..

Thanks for your answer.
I make further trials and looks like the problem happens when I try to plug some earphones/headphones with the mic/volume control on the wire (like the ones usually sold with a smartphone). This kind of earphones has 3 lines on the 3.5mm jack, thus if I plug it entirely, I had the issue described, while if I plug only up to the second line, it works properly..

Those type of headphones you mention are usully poor quality and realy are designed for phone use not high quality music listning plus they may be shorting the ipod or are incorrect impedance. If you use headphones for example a set designed with a high impedance the sound will be too low and will mostlikely distort as the small amp circut can't power them correctly.

I use a set of senheiser earbuds and they sound quite good no distortion at all I also tried my budies ultimate ears all sound fine no distortion.
