Using Gimp or Gimpshop

Hi, I recently installed Mac Box Set with version OSX 10.6.5 on my Macbook Pro. Since then I cannot use My Photoshop 7.0 anymore. From other topics I learned that I was not the only and I had to install the free X11 and Gimp. Problem is that this is complete different and I don't know how it works and I cannot find users instructions. So I also installed Gimpshop because this should be more users friendly. But this refuses to open and crashes immediately. Can somebody help me with an easy and clear users manual for using Gimp and how can I solve the problem with Gimpshop ? Thanks for all help !

While Adobe may disagree with me on this, I think Gimp is a perfectly fine photo editor just like Photoshop. So I am a little bit confused by your statement about it having nothing to do with Photoshop.

Personally, my suggestion is to consider Aperture. I have found that for the vast majority of my photos, I am able to do all of the editing I need right in Aperture.

Agreed Gimp/Gimpshop has nothing to do with Photoshop other than the fact they are both photo editors.

"Gimpshop" has not been supported since OS X 10.4 the last stable release May 17, 2006.

You can read more of what Scott Moschella has to say here: http://ask.metafilter.com/144788/What-are-my-intellectual-property-rights-here

You can reference this site for *Snow Leopard* for workaround with Gimpshop. http://www.strayprocess.com/blog/gimpshop-snow-leopard

You will need to install X11 for Gimp... X11 is installed in the Applications folder. If not, to install X11 insert the Mac OS X installation disc and double-click the Optional Installs package. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8568.html

Hope this solves your problem.

Photoshop 7 came out 9 years ago. It was actually an Mac OS 9 for PPC application that ran in the "Classic" environment on OS X. Support for "Classic" was dropped with the release of OS X Leopard in 2007. It won't work on OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard -- you need to upgrade to one of the CS versions (I believe Adobe offers a discount to previous owners of Photoshop).

GimpShop is no longer actively maintained (it was last updated sometime between 2006 and 2007) and the version they have for download uses some very old versions of some of the libraries GimpShop is built from which won't work with more recent versions of the OS. The process for updating it is tedious, but if you're interested, see here: http://www.strayprocess.com/blog/gimpshop-snow-leopard

Hi Allan and sig,
Thanks for your reply. I used photoshop mainly for editing plans etc. Starting from a scan I could make some changes (for rebuilding a house) and adding some signs and texts (for example making an electricity scheme). Secondly I used it for editing my vacation pictures.
When I try to open my saved documents with psd extension photoshop 7.0 opens authomatically and stops immediately because it does not work with OSX 10.6.5.
How can I open this saved documents and continue working and editing them ?
I am not interested in a newer version of Photoshop because it will cost me a lot of money and I do not know how long this new version will work.

I had already a quick look but seems very different with photoshop and not very user friendly. Will have to study a lot before I can use it properly.

Yes, if it were not different like that Adobe might go after them:-)

Another, perhaps easier, option is

Where are you in Belgium? I spent a number of years there in Antwerp and Brussels during the 80's.

Well, it's certainly different, and whether it is suitable for your needs will depend on what you are doing. Whether it is user friendly depends a lot on your perspective - people who cut their teeth on Photoshop tend to think it isn't, but I've known people who tried to go from gimp to PS and had the same complaint about PS. I guess it's what you're used to.

Hello Tom,

I made a download of Graphic Convertor and it worked perfectly and very user friendly. What a difference with Gimp!
But I could only try it out for 1 day without buying. As I understood it will cost me 35 or 40$. Not too much but again an extra cost.

Another option could be that I uninstall the OSX 10.6.5 version and return to the original 10.4 panther. This snow leopard caused me already lot of trouble since I installed it : problems with my HP Photosmart P1000 printer that did not work anymore, photoshop 7.0, iMovie complete different and causing trouble with many of my movies, my scanner, internet connection trouble, etc. etc.
These are the problems that I found since the last 2 weeks when I installed it. Perhaps I will meet more trouble in the future when I read some topics on this forum ?
When I return to my old reliable "panther" I can forget all the troubles.
Just shame of the money I have paid for that new Mac Box Set.

Thanks for the help! Raf.
