Screen recording

Hi everyone!
I burned a DVD which I am running on my Mac. I wish to make a screen recording of the video on the DVD. Although I can see the video running while I am recording, the end result is a blank (gray) screen. Is there something I am doing wrong? I recently did the same thing but with You Tube video and it worked fine. Can someone help?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

The built-in capture in QuickTime, unless I've missed something, by design will not capture DVD Player (due to the content owner's demands that Apple take steps to prevent someone from pirating commercial DVDs; dumb, I know, but there you are). You have a couple of options; you can extract and convert the video directly from the DVD, you can try another screen capture utility which may not have the same restrictions.

Thank you Dave. This makes sense but this is a homemade DVD burned from a PBS TV show. Maybe Quicktime does recognize the content as professionnaly broadcast? Can you suggest a freeware that could «rip» my homemade DVD?

It's designed not to capture the screen of DVD Player regardless of whether the content is copy protected or not. I can only presume that Apple decided it wasn't worth the effort to try and make it distinguish. As Kirk suggested, Handbrake should be able to handle conversion on a non-commercial. DVD.
