Mobile Device Service has stopped working?

My iTunes won't detect my iPod touch (2nd Generation). Every time I connect it with my computer, a pop-up comes up and say that Mobile Device Service isn't on, and that it has suddenly stopped and has to close down.

Here's what I've tried so far:

- Uninstalling (following the Apple support document on how to ~properly~ uninstall iTunes) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
- Reinstalling to the latest version
- Temporarily disabling AVG http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125

Here are my stats:

Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Studio 540
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU - Q9400 @ 2.66GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
Memory: 8190MB RAM

And here's what the exact error that I've been given from Windows:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: AppleMobileDeviceService.exe
Application Version: 17.64.0.5
Application Timestamp: 4cb91bf4
Fault Module Name: kernel32.dll

There was another thread here that talks about kernal32.dll but the thread suggests that I need to install the original AMDS (Mobile Device Service) of iTunes 10 instead of iTunes 10.1 version. I have no idea where to find that.

Any help would be amazing. Thanks!

THIS IS FOR PEOPLE WHO SUCESSFULLY INSTALLED AN OLDER VERSION OF AMDS, ABD THEY DON'T GET A CRASH ERROR, BUT THEIR DEVICE ISN'T REGONIZED IN ITUNES. For anyone who still can't get this to work and you read ALL of either my or robydid's instructions, then your iPod or iPhone firmware is too new. The only reason AMDS is updated is to support the new updates released by Apple. So, the newest version might have added support for 4.3.2. When version 10.0 was released, it might have been designed to support iOS 4.0 and below.... So you'll need to downgrade your firmware on someone else's computer where you iPhone or iPod IS recognized in iTunes

Another solution is to uninstall AMDS again, and try a different version...

OK so a week ago AMDS from 10.0.1 over iTunes 10.2.2 worked great with my G3 that has iOS 4.2. That night all was good with multiple restarts. I shifted movies and signed off. Five days later it is back to where I started with 10.2. Now what can I do?? I do not want to lose all on phone or do I give up? The other is to concede this to Apple by getting a 3GS hoping their genius can transfer info from 3G to 3GS

There was never a problem with the device or just AMDS. The device is at iOS 4.2 and with iTUnes 10.3.1.55 both are happy and have been multiples times now for four(4) days. I will not upgrade(?) or change a thing. My device has been undetected by iTUnes for over 6 months of its 20 month lifetime, yea it happened more than once, to me and many others. No change until a battery dies or the **** thing falls out of my pocket and is destroyed. I have more productive things to do than try and get iTunes to work with my device. 🙂

I am slightly confused by your post, but I think you are saying that you have iTunes 10.3.x and everything was fine, you didn't upgrade or change anything and it randomly stopped working. If this is true, then let me tell you this is exactly what happened to me when I was on 10.2. It just stopped working. If you haven't already tried the steps that either I or robydid gave, try doing that...

When are we going to stop punishing ourselves with updates. I do appreciate all your efforts and I thank both you and robydid along with hundreds of other at this site. Putting all the suggestions together now for over two years has gotten my iTunes and iPhone to work. It would do what I wanted for maybe one day, one week, or even a few months. Apple would then tell we need to upgrade and Voila iTunes fails to see our device once again. I am sorry to not have a solution, I stopped all upgrades when 10.3 worked. Maybe 10.8 and iOS 5.3 will work for you. 🙂

I have the same problem. I thought it started when I updated the OS on my iphone. I have tried uninstalling and updating everything. Some of the stuff you suggest above is a bit above me I think - I am beyond frustrated. Surely Apple must be aware and will bring out an update/patch? I appear to have an update to the amds on the 10th Oct 2010 that keeps appearing in my recycle bin although I have never put it there. I tried 'restore' that didn't work either - however, it has appeared there twice. Does anybody else have this anomoly? I am not a techie - is there any way an app? or a virus? could have caused this?
