Ipad Keyboard typing characters instead of letters

I have a separate desktop keyboard for my Ipad which also serves as a charger. This morning the keyboard started typing characters instead of the letters assigned to each key. How do you switch the keyboard back to typing letters?

Ipad, Mac OS X (10.6.6), Ipad desktop keyboard

Please give an example, like what comes up when you type "a".

Go to settings/general/keyboards/international keyboards and tell us what is there. Also tap each keyboard name and tell us what is checked under "Choose a Hardware Keyboard Layout".
