Where are auto-complete addresses stored?

Where does Mail get the addresses for the auto-complete feature when entering To or CC? I have a lot of obsolete addresses I need to get rid of.

Macbook - late 2008, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iMac 21.5" - late 2010

The ones that I'm trying to delete are not in my address book.
They do not have a little icon beside them or are they in my address book.
I just tried it again. I went to mail>window(in menu bar)>previous receipts
I deleted several addresses and then closed the window and quit mail
I restarted mail and checked previous receipts and everything I deleted was still there?

Am I doing something wrong?
I wonder of there is a preferrence file that may be corrupted and needs deleting to resolve?

Those entries are stored in a database inside your user/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook folder. It is called, MailRecents-v4.abcdmr

There may be a problem with that file that it is not getting updated when you make changes. You could just delete it if there is nothing in there worth keeping. However, that may not be the problem, so if you just move it to your desktop and start Mail, it will get recreated, albeit empty. If it accepts future changes, then the original was corrupted and the new one should work. If it doesn't work, then it wasn't the file and you could just move the old one back so that you have the old previous recipients.

I think that is due to the fact that in Lion, the user Library folders are hidden (invisible).

One way to get to your user Library folder when that folder is hidden:

Under the "Go" menu select "Go to folder ..."

and enter the following:

/Users/your_username/Library/ where "your_username" is your own short user name

Then you can click on the Application Support folder and then on the AddressBook folder and locate the desired file.

Apple made the folder invisible because they want to prevent you from moving or deleting files inside it, as that can cause other problems. If you are careful and know what you are doing, you will be ok.

ok, thanks for the info. I found it, and deleted it. Unfortunately, when I try to email a photo from iphoto, the auto complete still starts populating as i type. Deleting the file got rid of the auto complete from mail but not from iphoto. I have read other threads and several indicate that deleting the file referenced in this thread should work but it didn't. Iphoto must be populating it's own autocomplete list. Any advice? My problem is that I accidently typed the wrong email address when sending a photo via iphoto and now every time i want to send an email to the correct email (one extra letter), the incorrect one populates below the correct one. Not a big deal but I would rather get rid of it if possible.
