I would love to do the factory restore, and get things working again, but I have a load of movies and tv episodes on the ATV 1 that are not transfered to my computer, and will not transfer to my computer. I'm thinking I'll delete the connection from ATV to computer, and then re-establish it. Hope this does not cause any content on the ATV to be lost.

I was having the same problems as everyone else. I just got it working.
1. Get out of Itunes on your Mac.
2. Go to your AppleTv if not in same location
3. Disconnect your library.
4. It then should say Connect "Itunes Library"
5. select connect to "Itunes Library"
6. You should get a new code for syncing. ** Get rid of the streaming if this is not what you want**
7. Go to your Mac open ITunes.
8. You will see the AppleTv in your Library area.
9. Click on it. Enter the Code
10. syncing should start. You can select the Auto or go Custom.
Note** It appears to be re-syncing everything, However it appears to be running quickly.

I hope that helps. IMAC I7 2TB 16g

I've had the same problems. I've restored factory settings but ATV still not showing up in device list on my iTunes. iTunes software, everything up to date. I have checked and both the iMac and the ATV on are on the same wireless network. I can download shows from iTunes stores but cannot get my iTunes on my iMac to recognise ATV.

Lost all content on the ATV. Very, very frustrating. Don't know what else to do. I really miss having ATV working.

It just stopped syncing one day.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

OK somewhere between iTunes 9.X upgrade to 10.0.1 lost ATV showing up in iTunes. Trying to fix problem, lost 1000 songs and all movies, etc. from 1st gen ATV when I selected "disconnect from current library." Went back into iTunes (10.2.0.34 after 3/02 or so upgrade). Could only see Apple TV with "Settings" and "Photos" tabs. Settings had nothing but basic serial no. etc from ATV. Nothing could be changed here. No possibility of syncing.

Steps which returned syncing capability:

Returned to menu in ATV, specifically "Settings/Computers" then broke the link from the my main iTunes Library (again). iTunes on the computer then showed ATV "click here to setup" in the left-hand frame. I got another 5-digit code from ATV and entered it in iTunes on the computer. Voila - syncing functionality and all the tabs I was familiar with returned!

It will take some time to resync - but I can at least go get some sleep without having to research this problem ad infinitum. However Why T F we had to go thru this pain in the first place is beyond me. This sort of similar experience with a new MACpro and rollout of Snow Leopard (with no drivers to speak of) was exactly why I packed up $3500 in new equipment and sent it back to Apple a year and a half ago.

I love my refurb 1st gen ATV, and I love my iPod 3rd and 4th gen Touches when used with a Sprint mifi card...but Apple - are you really testing this stuff and considering user experience BEFORE rollout? Reminds me of Windoze98.

So, sadly as far as I know, the fix for not being able to sync or see your 1st gen ATV in iTunes 10.X.X, at present is to break the connection with current library (which wipes all synced content from the ATV drive) and then reconnect to your library, and then break the connection and reconnect one last time. For me, these steps returned all functionality as before (or so it appears at this point).

Another 4 hours lost on technology. The more things change the more they stay the same (or regress). Hopes this helps someone else save some time. Cheers!

My advice is DON'T reset to factory settings or break the link to your computer and set it up again. My ATV1 stopped showing up on my iTunes a few weeks ago. I tried everything but nothing seemed to work, so I eventually broke the link to my computer and set it up again. It wiped everything off my ATV and it took me nearly a week to sync it all again. That was fine, but yesterday my Apple TV was showing under devices in iTunes and then kept dropping off after a few minutes. I kept rebooting my laptop and it would show again under devices for a few minutes and then dissappear, even in the middle of syncing. Today it has gone completely and no matter what I do - reboot ATV, reboot the laptop or reboot the router, it will not show up in iTunes. My laptop is on the internet and I can get into the iTunes Store and my ATV is connected to my WiFi and I can get onto Youtube. THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING ! IS THERE ANYONE FROM APPLE WHO CAN ADVISE, AS THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MASSIVE PROBLEM FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE ?
