Import hotmail folders to Mail

Hi there,

Im a new Mac user and for a lot of years I used to use windows mail clients, my problem is that I have folders in my hotmail account and although I already add my msn account in Mail I can't see or access to my hotmail folders. Is there any way to import my hotmail folders to Mail?

I really appreciate your helpful answer.

Thanks a lot Matty_V.

The information in the link worked as treat. All my hotmaial folder synched. I willl explain the steps as all of us as I believe we have POP mail in Mac mail application and we don't have the option to chose iMAP. The steps if you have mountain lion are s;ight;y different than what was in the link and thery are:

1. Open Mac Mail.

2. From the File menu, choose Add Account…

3. Input Email Address/User Name as a dummy value, like example@example.com.

4. Input Password to a dummy value, like “password”.

5. Click Continue.

6. You will recieve a warning message, just ignore it and click Connect

7. Choose Account Type: IMAP. you can choose Description as Hotmail

8. Input the following as the Incoming Mail Server: imap-mail.outlook.com.

9. in here, enter your actual username (including @hotmail.com for exaple) and actual password.

10. Click Continue.

11. Input the following as the Outgoing Mail Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com. Leave discription empty

12. Choose to Use Authentication.

12. Click Continue.

13. Click Create.

Enjoy guys. A big relieve for me now and I hope for all of you

I am very concerned about these ionstructions from Chrisma01. It says to "ignore the error message". But when you read the error message it actuallys says that "you might be connected to a server that is pretending to be "example.com" which could put your confidential information at risk!". And after you have made the necessary changes, you might have given your personal login and password away!!??

I don't know too much about this stuff, but will stay clear of any dodgy sounding instructions and stick to my GMAIL, which beautifully synchronises everything. Unless a more experienced and respected member here can advise. Maybe this should even be forwarded to Apple Support..

Hi gpress,

I feel frustrated when people like you talk about others in a bad manner. you could have simply asked.

Anyway, if you read the instruction carefully you will notice that by the stage when you receive the warning message, you have not entered any correct data. What you actually do is to Mac mail transfer to the manual mail set-up than using the automated one and there will be no connection as there is no server called example.com. Then when you enter your correct credentials, you will modify at the same time the server's address to outlook server before you connect.

If you check the link that Matty_V has provided, it is from Microsoft and who answered the question is a Microsoft moderator.

As Csound1 said, it is a new service, and I think in the future this will be added to Mac mail anyway. I agree as well with Csound1 that Gmail is superior at this time, but for someone like me who recently moved to Mac and I am using my Hotmail for 17 years, then it is more convenient to stay using Hotmail.

Hi all,

Carried out the instructions supplied by "alexisyancy" and can report that all my folders are listed under a folder marked "Import" the same as AavUK.

My problem is that all the messages are numbered like 00000000-00000000.eml not named and also out of order making it impossible to find a particular message.

I would like to know if anyone else has this problem and have the resolved it or not.

Got to this Link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/outlook/send-receive-from-app

If your email app doesn’t support Exchange ActiveSync, it might use IMAP. Unlike POP, which only syncs your inbox, IMAP syncs all your email folders.

Use the following settings in your email app.

  • Incoming (IMAP) Server
    • Server address: imap-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 993
    • Encrypted Connection: SSL
  • Outgoing (SMTP) Server
    • Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)
    • Authentication: Yes
    • Encrypted Connection: TLS
  • User name: Your email address
  • Password: Your password

This Just worked for me perfectly. No more Mbox app...woohoo!!
