Apple never ported any of their Applications to Linux, so I would say iTunes will never come to Linux.
You must choose a 3rd party Linux player that can handle iDevices for Music Syncing.
I know for a fact that Banshee in Suse Linux Enterprise 11 can sync with ipods and iphones. Ubuntu likely too, since they use the same player now.
Evolution can be made to sync the Contacts from iDevices and partially the Mails.
For all other means like Apps there is nothing .. You can only use the iDevice itself to install them.
Competing small devices booting to Android and other OSes already have content store interfaces for Linux
Andoid and most of these "other OSes" are build on Linux. No Wonder then..
Apple,
Please can you confirm your current opinions on providing iTunes for Linux, In the future, or never. Either it is a real possibility or it isn't. At least if we had some sort of response the global population would know where they stand.
At least do the world the courtesy of providing a response.
Regards,
Tom.

This is a user-to-user forum: you aren't talking to Apple here. As already said several times in this thread, a) Apple never announce or discuss their future plans, and b) the chances of iTunes or any other Apple software being ported to Linux are miniscule to the point of non-existence.
With the advent of the 'Cloud', I would say that there is a distinct possibility that in the near future all applications will be online anyway and that they will all be platform independent and all information will be stored remotely. Personal computers, laptops will all become status symbols and become more fashion than function... a thought for the day.
I am also very interested about this subject. I guess that there are a LOT of linux users interested.
to put a little context since the release of MacOs X this is a UNIX based OS. There are a few differences between Unix and Linux HOWEVER for the simple user (as apple's major target ) they both are the same thing. Buttom up: if unix/linux wouldn't existed neither this MacOs as we know it:).
So, dear Apple could you please spend a few of your money (we know that you have 😀 ) to make a Itunes build for Linux???
Anyway this itunes absence from the scene is REAAAALY a pretty good reason to migrate to Android platform.
Cloud storage is irrelevent when the local system cannot access or manage the device. Apple provides device management software for Windows because that OS is such a large share of the market. Linux and OS-X are both growing in market share relative to Windows yet the Linux tools are nowhere to be found.
You don't need iTunes to manage your iPod in Linux. I've been doing it since 2007.
Both Rhythmbox and gtkpod are pretty good if you only need to manage music/videos/photos.
You can find them in the default repos both for Ubuntu and Debian.
Linux will mount the device just fine.
Just use Banshee, you can even sync to an Ipod,Iphone,Ipad and it just looks like the real Itunes.
The only problem is, you can't sync apps and information (contacts,documents,...) 😟.
But if you have an Ipod nano, Ipod shuffle or Ipod classic it's perfect 😉.

I know what the person who stated this thread. I am currently a Ubuntu Linux user with NO dual boot with Windows. I have updated my iPhone to 5.0.1 and now linux can not reach it and they have NO idea on when and if they could get it working anytime soon 😟 I do think that Apple should release a verison of their iTunes for linux users, even if its a verison where you can move videos/photos/music/documents between your PC and the apple product itself.
Linux has now got around a 10% market share in the personal computing, so it does seems a bit stupid that Apple have not released anything for linux to support their customers who use that operating system.
To me, it would make a lot of sense for Apple to more thoroughly integrate iTunes into iCloud. If iTunes were cloud-centric, it would not matter which OS someone was using, whether it be OS X, Windows, Linux, a BSD, or anything else. By doing this, Apple could save a considerable amount of money by no longer needing to maintain iTunes for OS X and Windows, and they could even bring in added revenue by tapping into the small, but growing desktop Linux market. While Linux is running on a very small percentage of desktops, it is growing in popularity worldwide, especially in places like Europe, India, and Brazil.
I have an iPhone and Linux is my desktop OS of choice, and while I love the iPhone, I have been tempted to switch to an Android phone because iTunes will not run effectively in Linux. I have tried running iTunes in Wine and this is not a viable option for me because iTunes is very "buggy" in Wine will not sync with my iPhone.
I can only think of one person I know who uses Linux and dual-boots, several of us run Mac, and Windoze VM's, But it isn't convenient to to leave what you are doing and reboot, or fire up a virtual machiene just to run one app.
As For Linux users being a small persentage of apple users, that works both ways. Neither I or any Linux user I know (which is a lot) will buy apple products because we know they are not going to work with our OS of choice. For the tiny amout of effort it would take to port the software over many of us would happily reconcider. And yes, it would be a tiny effort, the Mac OS currently runs on a Linux Kernel, so most of the hard work (for porting) isn't an issue.

Sweet! I'm in the 1 percenters! Does this mean that Linux users are taxed at 15%. 😉
I'm reading (and typing in) this forum from my Linux laptop. I suppose iTunes would run inside of Wine. Some day I'll have to check that out.
I have been a mac user since getting my first G4 ibook back in 2003, though I have been a Linux user for much, much longer. In fact, if I can remember right, I was turned onto the Mac due to OS X and I basically switched from Linux back then. It wasn't until several years ago with the cloud in its infancy, that I have partially switched back to Linux. I now use Linux for the desktop and I have an Apple MBP for my laptop, syncing them through the cloud. I also have a mixture of iOS and android devices (I'm not really liking the android phone more than the iPhone, but it certainly does have its advantages). Other than android, I don't think Linux threatens Apple. I also don't think many people are going to put Linux on their laptops and desktops because of their experiences with android, so I think iTunes for Linux (at least a .deb package, come on....) would be a great way to corner a new customer base. If Linux users had access to iTunes, they might be so inclined to purchase an iOS device, which in turn may push them towards the Mac.
At the very least, it would add to the sales of music, movies and iOS devices, though by how much is anyone's guess. Linux, in the past several years with distros like Ubuntu and Fedora, have grown legs and the failure of Microsoft, especially with Vista, has only helped propogate the free operating system. Many people who fell victim to the Vista fraud, had a cheap and easy solllution to making their computers functional again and that sollution was Linux. The point here being that Linux has gained significant popularity in the last several years (excluding android devices), thus it should be given a little more credit.
With all of that being said, I do feel the need to disclose my own personal biases becauses iTunes for Linux would be a tremendous boon for me, as it would make my own workflow a little more pleasant. I certainly would start buying my music and movies from Apple instead of the competition. Eventhough I have the new iPad and an iPhone, I'm hesitent to purchase media from iTunes because of my Linux devices.
