Flat rate for Apple Depot screen repair? Downside?

I'm sure I could have found a better place for this, apologies in advance.

My friend's A1226 display is glowing, but striped and basically not working. Took it to a store and they said $450 repair in-store, $350 for the Apple depot. Are they assuming the display is no good, even though it might just be the cable? Is that covering a display repair? Is there a downside to the depot service, is it warrantied? I suggested he take that route as I didn't want to be involved in repairing the LCD, expensive proposition and dangerous if I mess it up or the issue is not the LCD. Is it going to get to the depot only to have them say its more?

Appreciate any guidance you can give.

A1226, Mac OS X (10.4), N/A

I've not used the Depot repair but I've heard nothing but good reports here from people who send their MBPs to the depot. As I understand it, they completely go through the computer and fix anything they find wrong for the flat fee. People report that they've gotten their computer back and found the optical drive was replaced because it was starting to act up for the depot techs, Some even got a new battery, all for the same flat fee.

They only downside is that the depot repair takes a little longer. Most report a seven business day turnaround. However, if an local Apple Store has to order parts, that could take close to the time of a depot repair.

On all MBPs but some of the older 17" models, the display (and anything inside, including the LVDS (video) cable) is a complete 'clamshell' replacement. So, in short, yes, the depot repair would cover it.

The depot is a flat-rate repair, so they'll fix anything wrong with the computer that was not caused by accidental damage or abuse for the price you were quoted. Make sure your friend backs up their data first, they've been known to restore OSs if there are software issues.

Here is my experiance with Apple Depot...

Like many 2011 macbook pro my screen started to act up and ended up turning off (reports of issues with the GPU - logic board)

Took it to Apple, gave me 2 options...

1-In store repair which would cost more than $900 only for the logic board 0_o

2-Depot repair for $310

Guess which i chose?!..

Sent my 2011 macbook pro on wednsday and recieved it on the following tuesday

Depot replaced my logic board, memory ram, screen hinges AND battery...

All for $310

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY 😉
