Safari won't connect to internet

Safari won't connect to internet (I'm on Firefox now and glad I had it as a backup!). I am getting a message that the computer isn't connected to the internet. But it is. Firefox works. I used to use it when I had a PC, but have been using Safari since I got my Mac a year ago. I haven't upgraded to 10.6.6 yet as I just got an external hard drive to back up my system with Time Machine before doing the upgrade. My data is backed up on Carbonite so I won't lose it, but after reading so many of the discussions about the latest Snow Leopard Upgrade I thought it best to wait until I backed up the whole system, in case something goes wrong. Software update didn't notify me automatically about the 10.6.6 update so I got a little concerned. I know that is an issue for another forum, but thought the more info ya'll have, the easier it might be to help me find an answer.
Safari worked fine last night. And I can tell from my modem that I am connected to the internet. Plus I am here at Apple Discussions so it must be something with Safari. Is this when I trash a plist? If so, which one? Or do I need to do something else? Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks ahead of time

HI MOM!!!

I thought it was bookmarks when your Chrome wouldn't work after installing the Safari bookmarks.
Sometimes, that just happens. You could, if you really want to, go through them one by one putting them back in and testing til it crashes. Or you can just start over. LOL. There is at least one corrupted Bookmark in there. I don't think you did anything to cause it. Stuff just happens sometimes. Now, you had 5,000 of them, that would be another story, IMHO. Myself, I would now trash the Safari folder, because there was a brand new fresh one installed when you restarted Safari.

Ask away, my dear. I always did.
And I learned tons. 😉

I always thought that if Safari was the default browser, all of the other iApps would be funky.
In other words, if the browser doesn't work, how would iTunes, iChat, Software Update, etc., be able to get out to the Internet?

Chrome is working too. Do you think that one of the Bookmarks was corrupted or something? I have to admit, I am so used to not having problems with my Mac (vs when I had a PC) that I get extra frustrated when I have a problem. If I have to recreate bookmarks so be it. I had way too many anyway. and if I lose some, it probably means I don't need that website anyway.

Do you think that restoring the plist from Carbonite would cause the problem again? I really don't want to go through this, but I had a lot of bookmarks, like I said too many probably. I'm not sure how I would restore them one by one anyway, and I guess that would be just as time consuming as starting over. Any suggestions? and do you think it makes sense to use a different default brower than Safari to keep this from happening. When I had a pc I used Firefox because IE was always causing me problems. I like Safari because it is pretty easy to use and definitely secure. I don't have any antivirus software now and feel like Safari is very secure.

I think I will try the carbonite restore first. leaving firefox open just in case. I never exported the bookmarks from safari back to firefox when i got the mac so most of them arent there anyway. I guess whether it works or not depends on when the bookmark got corrupted. but i will try and I'll let you know if it works or not. Still I know what file to trash if I have too.

thank you so much.

one more question. when I had the problem with the deleted bookmarks, I made a copy of the bookmark plist (?) which is also in the folder I am about to trash? do I just remove the "copy" from the file and drag it to replace the current plist in the new Safari folder in Finder? It's dated Dec 10 so shouldn't have the corrupted file, right? Does what I am asking make sense?

That's why your Firefox works, I'd bet.

Do you mean the bookmarks.plist?
Because that screwed Safari & Chrome up.
I would throw the whole folder away, with that plist in it.

If you rebuild you bookmarks from scratch, and restart SAfari, it will rebuild a good .plist in that folder for you. Don't try replacing individual parts of the that folder. Trash & empty trash on the whole thing.

Bee, if you are there, or someone else please help me figure out how I can determine which bookmark is causing this problem to reoccur. I have started a new list and now I am again not connected. Can I eliminate one at a time or do I need to start all over again?

I thought this was solved, but obviously something is causing the problem. But it doesn't seem to happen right away.

I am back on Firefox to get to the internet. and have been deleting bookmark categories and so far nothing seems to make a difference.

and Chrome isn't working either. and I don't have any bookmarks there. so it seems like Firefox is about it. which is kind of scary in a way. at least as internet connections go. Firefox just upgraded itself.

Do you think this has anything to do with why my automatic updates didn't seem to see the latest software update for snow leopard? Or am I confusing issues?

I just trashed the safari folder from Library and it isn't working either. don't know what else to do. and i Tunes isn't working either . can't get to the itunes store. do I need to reinstall Safari? help. i wasn't very many places and had very few bookmarks.

Thank you. I will do that next time, because I already trashed the Safari folder. And for some reason, after about 1/2 hr or maybe a little longer, both Safari and Chrome started back up. I had just left my computer because I was getting so frustrated, I was sure I would do something to make it worse. When I came back and started them both up they worked. What I thought I would do for now, is add the bookmarks into Chrome until one of them messes it up again. Because iTunes and maybe other Apple applications seem to get messed up when Safari loses contact with the internet, I don't want to risk it for now. What is perplexing to me is why Chrome also lost the internet, because I don't think I had any bookmarks there. And Firefox does have some and it stays connected.

So until it happens again, I guess I won't be able to pinpoint it. I would think it must be something in that Safari folder. But I don't want to make that assumption without knowing for sure. So I am going to try to keep some good notes and gather real information so that when it happens again (and I am pretty sure it will) I will have as much accurate information to give all of you who have been so helpful and responsive.
